Has anyone else got pics of a piece that was far from the prettiest thing when it came home? Here's a Fisher 500C that I rescued last Friday, from the work area of my car mechanic's shop. I've never seen so much dirt on a piece.
Byrd
Follow Ups:
Just a thought: if there is brake pad material there, would be highly abrasive and may leave scratches on metal if rubbed and dull the tubes.
This one probably has a good coating of asbestos brake shoe dust. Coatings of different things (including cigarette smoke) can protect an item and when cleaned you will be amazed. A mask and compressed air might be the start, in an open field if possible.
Any asbestos is long gone now....blown down the street to the other side of the tracks with an air compressor. Step aside. This weekend...the smell of Bose burning in the backyard fireplace may be in the air. It's almost time for "The Annual Burning of the Bose" at Byrd's!!!!
I just want to add a big AMEN (even though i'm not exactly religious) to the asbestos warning! Asbestos may not be in much use now, but back when that Fisher was new, they didn't know how harmful it was, and the brake pad industry lived off it. Oh yeah, I should say brake "shoe"! Brake shoes were a LOT bigger than most modern brake pads also.
Also clutches in both manual and automatic transmissions. Heat shields in old radios can be asbestos too.
Simply because you can usually get them for a song and there's a 50/50 chance you'll find a pristine piece under the dust. Seriously, the first Dyna Mark III that I ever owned looked like that. It was sitting on a book shelf in the original owner's den. Gave it a good cleaning and found NO rust pitting in the chrome and a set of beautiful-testing and sounding Mullard KT88's. Of course, it all has to do with humidity control. I suspect a piece that has lived in a garage may not be so fortunate, but you never know. It's like unwrapping a present! Sorry, no pics. After waiting for several years for a mate, it went off to epay to fetch a nice ransome.
