Its a very nice sounding tuner actually. I found mine locally at a flea market. The guy I got it from made me take a Sony TC353 reel to reel with it for $35. The tuner was still in the original box and packing etc. I also have several Scott tube tuners and I think it sounds as good and in some ways better though the Scotts seem to have a slightly "brighter" sound quality. To bad there are no stations around here worth listening to...
Follow Ups:
being new to tube tuners, what should the optimal tuning point look like on the tuning indicator tubes (EM84 in this particular unit I think)? I read somewhere that they should overlap in the middle to form a bright line. Right now, with the strongest local station the two bars are not touching . . . . there is still a gap between them. This local station is very strong and comes in loud and clear pretty much everywhere and with this tuner. Should I be concerned that the bars are not overlapping? Again, I haven't done anything to this tuner, so perhaps I should re-seat all of the tubes and spray a little De-Oxit in the sockets (I read in another post that this helped, even though everything looked good).
I've found that the bars only overlap on the very strongest of stations so for weaker stations getting the gap between the bars the smallest is best. One thing that needs to be done is all the tubes need to be checked as just one weak IF tube can hurt. Also because some parts values have certainly drifted over time the unit should be aligned by someone that knows what they are doing. If the discriminator is off there will be distortion and a weak tube or poorly aligned IF can cause all the stations to appear weaker than they should and also make it noisier. The MPX alignment has a lot to do with the way it sounds also. I'd check all the tubes first and go from there....
When I got mine it worked fine in mono but in stereo it was distorted bigtime and that turned out to be a leaky capacitor..
They are all originals and look to have seen little use, but 40+ years is a long time so who knows what kind of working condition they are in.Thanks for the info.
