Yamaha, Denon, and Soundcraftsmen (made in the USA!) are some excellent sounding amps. The Soundcraftsmen PCR800 is a delicious MOSFET amp, I have two that I run bridged for 900 watts into 4 ohms, 600 watts into 8 ohms. The Soundcraftsmen, especially, run under the radar and are just incredible bargains. I have also had four or five of their 250 wpc amps, and still have the PA5001 basic black box amp.
Yamaha preamps are some great gear.
Now, mind, these are 80s gear, and one of my Yamaha preamps is mid-90s.
For receivers, the Concept line is excellent. The big 165 wpc Concept 16.5 receiver allowed me to sell off my other 6 TOTL major brand receivers.
Follow Ups:
i totally agree on the Yamaha preamps
I have a C2 A -and its phono section trounced
the famous APT-Holman preamp. The build quality is
unequaled today .. I am hoping to find a better example of the matching tuner- the T2 ...I bought a low cost one off ebay
it was very poor in the cosmetics- and to add insult to injury
one of the corners sustained injusry in shipping
it was poorly packed,,sounds good -tho ...
Neve played with the Soundcratsmen stuff - their equalizers
were the only things I had some exposure to...
Good Mosfet amps are rare..had a factory sample of Hafler 200
for a while...pretty darn good- the hi end was not as smooth
as the Pioneer M22 Class a i was using at the time
I have posted often that I also like Yamaha peramps. If you get a chance, you might also want to try Yamaha amps. I have had very good results with a C-4 and a C-60. The C-60 is in my system now and sounds quite smooth runnign in Auto-Class A.I have always wondered about the Pioneer M22. I don't think they made that many.
You've got that right, Dave!
I have the M-80 & M-70 amps, and a C-80 & CX-2 preamps. Simply excellent gear and the epitome of that certain Yamaha Natural Sound (actually a lack of their own sound--kinda like nothing between the source and the speaker systems). The only problem is that I don't have room to set up the M-70/C-80, so they languish in their boxes.
I still have the big R-2000 receiver, too.
My M60 is large. I'll bet the M-70 and M-80 are qute large. You also need some room if you want to run Auto Class A mode. My M-60 gets very warm. I am currently running a C60 and have a C85 in the wings. (I also have a C-40 and C-4.) I still have to fix the output RCA's on it. The sound is very "natural" played thourgh the very transparant and revealing Spendor BC-1 speakers. I'm happy!
I have a better chance of building one myself from things I can find around the house than I do of finding one to buy at a price my wife will stand still for.
Best receiver I've heard. The best all-round performer. Not simply the 165 wpc, but 250!! wpc into 4 ohms. 5-gang tuner that sounds as good as most separate tuners (and I have a half-dozen tuners).
The Concept 16.5 is a wonderful receiver.
I've heard from Concept 11.0 and 5.5 (TOTL before the 16.5) owners that consider them to be the best in class. Even the baby 2.5 has garnered high praise.
There is a Concept Audio group at Yahoo Groups.
While I believe the 16.5 is the best receiver, I know of one guy that sold his 16.5 and swears by his new 11.0.
