I located a used Quad 77 turner for $339.00. Deminsionally and visually it matches my Meridean 508 CD player which would look great in my system also consisting of Quad ESL 57 speakers. BUT, how good is the Quad 77 tuner?

Do you have any special reception conditions? For eample; do you have a favorite station that is one or two spaces away (200khz or 400khz) or do you need sensiitivy to pull in weak stations? What are the critical dimensions/colors?As far as value goes, you can get quite a few different great tuners for less than you are considering; Sansui tu-717, Pioneer tx-9500 or 9500 II are just a couple. You can get modded versions of these for your price range and probably greatly outperform what you are considering.

Go to fmtunerinfo.com and read. Also: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FMtuners/
These guys know all you could possibly want to know. My own personal advice would be is if you want the best sound for the money buy a Kenwood KT 7500 and have it modded. Sound quality is outstanding and no stock tuner can trump it for sound quality or reception if you have that part modded too. There's many options but a vintage tuner with a new op amp(s) and fresh caps in the power supply and audio path will get you a long way for your money. Also don't forget that a good outdoor antenna not only helps reception but sound quality too. Radio shack makes one for 25 bucks that's pretty good and far better than any indoor antenna. Good Luck
