Hi, I also have M150's and have done a fair amount of tube rolling. I have a Rogue M99 pre and Maggie 3.6R speakers, just for completeness.
I am also running RCA cleartops in the 12AU7 positions, and have found the biggest bang for the buck is in the 12AX7 slot. I was not a big fan of the Sovteks, and after trying several NOS and new tubes, the JJ 12 AX7 (http://triodeelectronics.com/12ax7teslamp.html) worked out the best. Really nice tube, Telfunken knock offs, and you can't beat 'em for around 20 bucks a pair.
I also switched from the EH KT88's to the Shuguang GEKT88's (also known as the Penta KT88SC's). Very rich bass, nice tone top to bottom, and warmer mids than the EH.
Hope this helps! I know this stuff is very system dependent...

Jerry,
Over in the Preamp/Amp asylum someone recommended the new Tung-Sol 12AX7. I had a couple laying around and tried them. Much warmer than the Sovteks. Sibilance also improved. It surprised me how much the sound changed. My amps came back from being upgraded with the Sovteks.I just ordered a pair of the JJ's. Where do you source the Shugang/Penta KT88's?
Thanks for the input,
bob
Hi Bob,
I tried the tung sols, too. They are nice, but I much prefer the JJ's. I hope you do too. A very different sound between the two, I find the JJ's a bit more balanced across the audio spectrum, the tung sols having a bit darker, "tubier' sound, but lacking some of the clarity.
I like both of them better than the Sovtek LPS's though. I call the 12AX7's "the flavorizer tubes", as I have found they make such a huge difference in the sound of the M150's.
Let me know what you think of the JJ's when you get them!I bought the Shuguangs as two matched quads from a gent in Hong Kong that has a store on on Ebay (Adelie audio, if I recall correctly). They arrived in perfect order within a week, and I really like them. I know other folks have gotten them either direct from Penta or from another overseas source. If you search on GEKT88 or Penta KT88SC you should be able to get some direction there.
Thanks Jerry. I'll keep you posted.
