My previous post with my opinion of the new SED's I installed in my ST 70 stated that I was not very impressed with their sound.....actually I finally just pulled them after a couple of days and put my JJ E34L's back in....and my rig sounded superb once again.
NOW.... for giving the SED's a second chance last night, I re-installed them, flipped my 2 front mounted swiches to triode mode ( I modified this awhile back for quick and easy switching to triode mode), let her warm up awhile, tweaked bias, and gave it listen....UNBELIEVABLE TRANSFORMATION! The SED's in triode mode really sound super impressive now....the flat soundstage opened up 1000%, forceful mids now became very open and liquid, bass character become absolutely perfect...overall everything was soooo smooth and right. I can now give some credit to the tubes that so many have thought to be so good. They are NOT good at all in regular ultra-linear mode for my rig....would hate them. AND, by the way, I prefer listening to my JJ's in ultra-liner mode...not triode.
Go Figure.
Follow Ups:
Interesting...yet another fine example of different tastes and results based on the plethora of systems and different system synergies around hear...My ST70 is also modified to run in triode mode, but I usually run it in ultra-linear as my Trente seem to enjoy that more, no matter which output tubes I'm using. I preferred the SEDs in ultra-linear, but today switched to triode to run the KT-77 I've been using for several months in that mode for a while.
Need a few more days and this pesky flu to be gone before I can determine if it's preferable.

I've STILL been determined to like the SED's....isn't ridiculus why we want to put ourselves through this sick thought process???
Anyway, I all of a sudden remembered that I had the Sylvanis 7199's in my amp....that I really do prefer in my listening comparisons when I've got the JJ E34L's going. Maybe, just maybe, I thought that the RCA black plates might be the right combo with the SED's and that's why I have not really liked them in my system. Stuck the RCA 7199's in there with the SED's and YES......that's got the baby sounding just right!
This is not subtle at all.....went from hating to loving the SED's....so take notice all of you ST70 owners.
get yourself a vintage, metal-based Mullard Rectifier GZ34 / 5AR4 tube. They are usually very expensive, but the one I use is FAR SUPERIOR to other, vintage recifier/NOS recitifier tubes I tried (3 different ones). You can almost justify the expense of a metal based rectifier by accepting that it may last longer than most of us mortal souls 'round hear...I've also found NOS RCA 7199 to be the best I've yet encountered.
"isn't ridiculus why we want to put ourselves through this sick thought process???"Sometimes it seems that way till everything falls into the sonic grace we seek, then there ain't a damn thing about the process that IS ridiculous, just interesting and fun! Good for the ears, good for the soul...
ENJOY!!!

Thanks for your follow up......and yes, there really is one part of this whole process that is a true fact.....and that's the word "synergistic".
Have had my reference system in it's "current state" for over two years now and enjoying the music more than ever ( 40 years of madness). And once things are this close......take VERY small steps.....one at a time....that works together and works for your ears.
I haven't had to touch my speaker wires, interconnects....nothing....after getting my system right awhile back.
And yes, I am using a Mullard rectifier....not metal base, but thick base, and it does make a HUGE difference over the other one out there.
