my integrated amp can be used as a seperate power amp by disconnecting the pre-amp to the main. When I do this while the amp is on there is always a loud buzz so I plugged in a wire into the headphone jack connected to nothing, to avoid hearing this noise and possibly damaging my speakers. Tonight I noticed that during the time when I would hear the loud buzz, the right pair of EL34 tubes where flashing. Is this normal/safe? Thanks. It is a Luxman LX-33.

You broke basic Rule #1. Never make or break with the power on!
You are risking damaging the tubes or other components in the amp by doing this. When you disconnect the preamp form the power amp you are likely (and unintentionally) disconnecting the ground before the positive. This causes severe hum which can drive the amp to a high power level and damage parts in the amp or speakers if connected. If you want to change states without turning of the amp you should consider adding a switch that will select multiple inputs without breaking the ground connection. Another option would be to use connectors that ensure breaking the positive before the ground. RCA connectors do not have a standard for the length of the contacts and therefor some will be ok and some won't be. XLR connectors will at least break both connections at the same time. You could shorten the positive pin a bit to force the issue.
thanks for the info. I am very happy with my current production SED EL34's and Shugaung 12AX7's and 12AU7's in my amp. I am only using one NOS Amperex tube in the 6AQ8 position. I don't mind turning the amp off and on quickly a few times a day to go from listening to cd's to vinyl, if this doesn't hurt the tubes too much. I used to leave my amp on 24/7, but since I put in more inexpensive tubes, I turn it off at night and often when I leave too. I am under the impression that I should still enjoy at least a few years of tube life... I do not want to risk damaging my amp or my speakers or modify anything either.
you are risking serious damage to the unit if you keep this up. Flashing output tubes are not normal.
can you provide more info. The reason I dont want to turn the amp off is because I switch between integrated and seperate mode a few times a day and don't want to wear down the tubes.
...if you continue this. Turn it off, wait maybe 30 seconds, do the switching, and turn it on. You won't damage your tubes; they're already warm.

thanks... so the damage to the tubes is from them cooling off and warming back up? Not from the surge of current required to turn them on?
I will turn it off from now on though... thanks for clarifying this for me.
...turned on at the same time with the tube COLD. That causes the biggest degree of consumption of coatings, etc. Turning it on while it's still warm or almost hot is less wearing.
