Greetings- A friend of mine just recently purchased a pair of supposed Mullard 12ax7 with Fisher labeled on the glass. He's kind of new at this and messed up the printing on this tube which looked almost too nice at first, to me. There are no acid etched date codes present on the glass either. Here are a few pics, one which details the top mica (which looks nothing like my acid etched genuine Mullard 12AU7s),and a link to another. I need to determine if he got scammed and if the seller knows what is going on as well. Seller has quite a few Fisher Mullards. Thanks for your help, wpod

MY 12 AX7's look a little different. The front has ECC83/12AX7 on the top line, then The Fisher is the middle line, then Fisher Radio Corp., New York. Down near the base it reads 1022-521. The back reads Made in Great Britain. The lettering does not rub off. They also have etched codes reading 163 B5B3 on one, and 163 B5B4 on the other. I am no expert and can't read these codes, although I think the B indicates the Blackburn factory. These are awesome sounding tubes. Unfortunately, one glows bright orange at the base during start up, so I am afraid it is not long for this world. Anyone have info on these?
That assembly above the top mica in the initial picture is strikingly similar to the sino 12AX7C. I would say if that is the tube which looks nothing like my Blackburn Mullards which I bought from a very reliable source in England and are acid coded and labeled Mullard. Then I think your friend has bought a Chinese rebranded tube. Also The listing tube and the tube shown are different.
I won't pretend to have the last word on this, as others are far more expert. But I do have 2 Fisher Mullard 12ax7's in front of me and they don't look like that.
That thing on top of the upper mica isn't on mine, and the mica "scallops" are a different shape. On each mica, 8 tips touch the glass. Do those have the two 'seams' on the top of the glass? Also, on mine, a total of 4 support rods are copper.Mine are from a Fisher 800C - early 60's.
Thanks for your input, what you describe is what my Mullards look like as well. The tubes in the auction appear to be just a bit too clean looking to me. Now I need to find out if the seller knows what they really are, or if he is just a victim as well. Trying to think of a tactful way to approach this. Any suggestions? Tubemonger, are you out there? Thank you, wpod
1022 on that is the IEC code; IEC was an American importer with legal license rights to the Mullard name in the USA, they could call anything Mullard if they wished. Normally, acid-etched (which cannot be wiped off) production codes must be present to ID actual Mullard plant made. The words Gt Britain at the top on that tube signify the ECC82 as a European (or Mullard) type # (vs the equivalent American type # 12AU7) & do NOT signify country of origin. Likely you did not get scammed nor did the seller purposely mis-represent, but both of you were/are sorely un-informed. Buying @ auction is not wise until you know much more about tubes & what you are actually buying; educate yourself (everything I mentioned above resides in the searchable asylum archives). Or better, buy from Asylum Sponsor tube dealers.
There does appear to be etched (not white print) codes below the lower mica but I cannot make them out in that pic. Entering date code into this forum's Text-to-Find box would discover a Philips, Valvo, Mullard code decipher if you scroll thru the returns.
