I like running my amp in triode mode and was wondering which power tube sounds closest to a SET .... EL34, KT88, 6550? I hear the 6550 mentioned a lot but I'm not sure if it's just the threads I stumbled on by accident.
Follow Ups:
Any power tube can be used in a SET, assuming you can triode wire it. Do you mean which indirectly heated power tube sounds like a DHT like 2a3, 300b? I don't think any have that exact immediacy and clarity. If you're talking small tubes, 2C22 is the closest I know to a DHT small triode sound. In a sense SET and DHT are contradictory - SET tends to widen the sound, and DHT tends to concentrate it. Maybe that's the magical synergy.
I would have to say a 6L6g or an el84 sounds most like an set and in sme cases its better because of the power curve IMHO.
I have a pair of BH Paramours with the iron upgrade. They use 2A3's in SET. They sound really transperant. Granted they may not be the top of the line in SET amps. But I have found an outstanding tone arm can bring alot of the SET transperency to a push pull. There have been times a system sounded too transperant (irritating). It just depended on the compination of tubes, interconnects and source etc. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But could SET's be a little overrated? In my opinion synergy is the most important thing.
Think smaller "Grasshopper". :~) The 6V6 and its close relations are extremely linear triode wired. They give nothing away to the REVERED 6SN7 in the linearity dept.A VERY nice 2+ WPC SE amp can be made from a 5965 and a pair of 6V6s. A preamp is not needed if a CDP is the source.

EL34 and KT66 in Triode mode sound nice. How close to DHT would depend on overall design. A good KT66 design will sound better then a poor DHT one but a good DHT will thump a IDHT
EL34 has a fuller sound, typically.

THat's what I have in my current amp. I read somewhere on the web that EL34 could be thought of as a poor man's 300B. That was a few year ago and I can't remember where I read it.
