Folks,
I'm running a stock 100 watt Velleman kit amp. eight EL34.B+ is 430 pv.Not sure of the primary impedance. The transformers are IPS torodial made in England.
I'm using older stock JJ-E34L,and have pounded them pretty hard over the last couple of years!.
I'm looking for a tube with nice treble extension with lots of air but not too bright or harsh.Solid deep low end and a nice smooth midrange.
I would describe my system as somewhat bright with some harshness in the top end,and would like to tone it down a bit.I listen to mostly vinyl.Rock jazz and blues, and really like to pull the trigger sometimes.I have heard good things about the JJ-KT77 and it can bias the same as a EL-34,but has a different sound?.
My friend who built the amp recommends SED wing "C" EL-34,and also thought with the lower plate voltage that a Chinese EL-34 would sound nice.
What are your thoughts?
Cheers,Rob.
Follow Ups:
I listened to the stock JJ KT77s in my Rogue Atlas for a few days before one flamed out. I thought it was fantastic. Mark O'Brien (Rogue) told me they have had no problems with the 77 reliability and I believe him. I have not tried the replacement set yet, so I cannot report further on the sound.
I highly recommend the electro-harmonix 6CA7 especially and their EL34EH also. They are both fine sounding tubes imo. The 6CA7 is supposed to be a little more rugged.
I do have the Ruby/Chinese EL34BSTR and it appears to be very well constructed. Not yet sure about the sound though.
I have not auditioned the SED but have heard it is good sounding and well built.
I'm a little surprised you have had such good luck with the E34L. I lost (flame out) two sets of those, one in the the mid '90s and another recently. They were not good sounding to my ears. The newer JJ E34L and LB (blue glass) are of different construction so may be worth a try too. Good luck!
Hi Tom,
Let us know what you think of the replacement set.
Maybe I've had luck with the E34L because I don't bias too hot.I keep them around 32ma.I tried them at 40 ma and lost a couple of tubes.
Yes hoping I can get better sound from a new different set!
