Brought a couple more boxes of TV/radio repairman-era stuff home from my father's former abode a couple of weeks back. No cache of Tele 12AX7's or globe 45's... most of his tubes were, as the old tube guys say, plinkers. Inexplicably, he had one sort-of interesting globe tube: a blue-glass Arcuturus brand 27. Finally unpacked it this afternoon; thought y'all might like to see it...Yes, I know that Arcturus tubes were no great shakes, AND I know this isn't an audio tube... but it still is pretty cool looking, if not actually, y'know... sexy...
all the best,

I have about 20 of them and finally got around to building a 27 based line preamp and auditioned several types of 27 variants and unfortunately the Blue Arcturus 27/127 tubes are hopelessly micro-phonic and sort of "dark" sounding. Its shame cause they sure look purty. The Cunningham 227s sound pretty good as do certain ST versions of the 27. Guess the blue tubes should stay in the old radio realm...
with shields and the red-coated topcap 33 tube and MoV KT66's and GZ32's, square shiny black cans, choke, exposed mains and op trannieshard techie looking and all though they were still say 'VALVEs' ter me!

I've got an old GE/RCA console radio/phonograph circa 32 where the #27 is used as a local osc, a detector and an AF amp/driver for PP #45s. It sounds surprisingly good considering its age. I've also got a PP #45 amp forever in the design stage where I've used the #27 as input amp. Although low gain by current standards, I've found it to be quite linear with OA nice sound here too.
Everyone who comes over would scratch their heads and say, "excuse my ignorance, but what is THAT"?
Great photo of a trippy tube.
Just kiddin...I like 27's............
