I recently got some slightly used GE 6CA7. Today I did a little comparisson between them and some JJ EL34L.I do think, that the GE 6CA7 sounded more spaciouse and cleaner. Instruments seem to sound more natural and more cristal clear.
I am not sure if I am imagining this, since I got some new tuebs.
Since it takes time between letting the tubes cool down and warm up again and being re-biased, it's difficult to 'remember' all the details and differences.
How is your experience with EL34 vs. 6CA7?
Are other 6CA7 like EH and NOS RCA similar in sound to the GE?

I would say you werent imaginging this at all.If you look at a 6ca7 and listen to it,it has more of the characteristics and physical size of a 6550 than an el34 or e34l so it doesnt surpise me at all what you are hearing.I have come up with the same conclusions years ago. Its drive requirements are supposedly identical to the el34 but I have found differences in some.
I'm a CAV-50 owner for nearly 2 years. During this time, I've tried a mix of EL34 tubes in the unit. The only new tubes I bought (and received yet) were a quad of E-H 6CA7 which worked good for weeks until one blew the fuse. Right now I am using two 6CA7 and two "old" EL34 -- a Phillips and a E-H.I have a pair of Groove Tube EL34-LS on order; they are recommended by some folks here (for guitar amps, at least!)
I'll admit that I can't hear a great deal of difference between tube types (short of the easy cases, like the whine as the old tube died). I am sure that differences exist, but also there is the ever-present "psychological" aspect of our hobby (more commonly known as "bullshit"!!!). Anyway, that's half the fun of audio, I guess.
The CAV-50, I think I read here somewhere, is less dependent upon specific tube type, matched quad, etc. Because each tube can be individual biased.
While I haven't tried it, I would think you could do a A-B test of two different pairs of tubes (left or right), if you can feed a mono signal to your amp.
You can find a lot of old posts on the CAV-50 if you do a search here.
I agree. I do not hear huge differences between tubes either.
The 6CA7 is supposed to be more rugged than the EL34, but it probably was more true years ago than today. The line between tubes and their rugged versions is very blurred today. The 12AX7/5751 is a small signal case in point.
I lightly tap on tubes I'm testing with a pencil. Regardless of the type, they are all close when it comes to microphonics using this unscientific test. Different frequencies will excite resonances at different points in them though, I'm sure.
I don't understand why these companies cannot make consistently good tubes. It's pathetic that the tubes made 50 years ago are more reliable.
Oh well, you play the hand you're dealt I guess.
