Anyone prefer one over the other as an output tube in a push pull pentode amp? Opinions please, thank you.

I own both and I prefer and EL34-based amp...
Is KT66 one of your choices? If so, try to get a matched pair of GEC/Marconi tubes. My preamp takes many variants, and this produced the best sound. With the 6L6GC, get RCA Blackplates. I agree about the 6V6 or 6Y6 also. They can sound very good, and are relatively cheap.
it's max voltage rating is far below that of a 6L6GC so one should exercise a great deal of caution if subbing a 6Y6 for a 6L6GC. A light show could ensue.I'm tinkering around with a circuit wherein I use a 6Y6 as a driver for a SE 2A3 amp. Haven't done the smoke test yet but I'm crossing my fingers.
I think the max plate voltage of the 6Y6 is 250 or so. But it can deliver loads of current so that's why I'm going to **try** it in a driver application again.
It sort of depends on the system balance ... in my present system I prefer the 6L6GC, but with a pair of speakers I had in the system a while back I preferred the EL34. While I haven't tried them yet, a lot of folks like the new KT77's.Best,
EL34 for sure because of more fun of changing tubes.
