What would the negatives be in using an in-line resistor on the 120 volt power cord for a slow start on a tube amp? My math tells me, if my amp draws 100 watts at idle, using a 100 ohm 25 watt resistor on the power cord I will get about 90 volts. Using that resistor for a few seconds, wouldn't that in effect give the tubes a slow start?............thanks
Follow Ups:
Use a CL70 thermistor (inrush limiter) in series instead of a resistor. The CL70 is rated at 16 Ohms @ 4 amps cold resistance, and the resistance will drop to about 1 Ohm in fifteen seconds or less. The perfect soft-start for your amp, and only costs $1.39, and is available at www.mouser.com (stock #527-CL70).
Regards,
Will a 2 10 ohm 5 amp work, I have 9 of those. thnaks.......Bob
I'm assuming you are refering to the CL60 thermistors, and the answer is yes. Use two CL60's in series and that combination will greatly extend the life of your amp and tubes.Regards,
Mike, thanks so much, I will put them in tonight.........Bob
This is on the primary? I've seen thermistors used with SS rectification, but not on the primary side of the PT.
