there were previous discussions on this topicand I tend to snipe
but sometimes I thought about the logic of non-sniping:
say the fair value of an item is $150
and most people will not pay more than $140 for such item
so if I place a bid of $141, it's likely that "rational" bidder would outbid me...
and for an irrational sniper he would pay the price he would most likely feel a bit over-paid...
Follow Ups:
not sure I understand your point. If you're just willing to pay more than anyone else, it doesn't matter what your strategy is. Sniping only avoids giving others who would bid higher, motivated by your bid, to do so by lack of time. So, it avoids getting into a bidding war and letting the price creep up with the competition. If an earlier bidder put in a high bid, they'll get it unless the sniper has put in a higher bid at the last minute, because the sniper doesn't have time to rebid.

and I tend to snipebut sometimes I thought about the logic of non-sniping:
say the fair value of an item is "$100"
and most people will not pay more than $140 for such item
so if I place a bid of $141, it's likely that "NO" "rational" bidder would outbid me...
and for an irrational sniper he would pay the price he would most likely feel a bit over-paid...
and the idea that an auction is 'rational' is laughable. Depends on the buyer's sanity and the hype of the ad.That's why it sometimes goes to the seller, and sometimes to the buyer.People are not rational. Individuals are, but people a a whole are not anything like sane, rational, smart, observant or good. Individuals are ov course...

Beware the man who behaves deceitfully towards others, for there is nothing else to save you from his deceiving you
should be: say the fair value of an item is "$100"
