Yes, the Sylvania VT-231/6SN7GT from the early 40s to the early 50s (bottom getter, tall bottle, T-plates) are good tubes. They have a good sense of air to their reproduction, with gorgeous top frequencies and a neutral midrange. The main drawback to the 40s vintage is they are lacking in deep bass. Some people contend that the 50s vintage (particularly 1952) have all the good attributes of the 40s vintage but with the major difference that these later productions actually had great bass. Whatever the truth/perception is, this particular 6SN7 design is a good one.
Follow Ups:
I have both the Sylvania '52 GT, the Sylvania VT-231 as well as a fair selection of other early 6sn7's and the bass on the VT-231 in my SA-11, and as a driver tube in Aria mono amps, is exemplary, deep, powerful, and detailed. While I am not going to contradict other inmates experience, I can say that with the right equipment they sound excellent. They are one of the three or four best sounding 6sn7's that I have heard.
I did not like anything about them in any of three different apps. Kinda boring.
i agree with len. i have several sets of 40's and 50's gt's and vt-231's (including the '52's). they're among my favorites.
