TungSol 6SN7GT Roung Plate.
Thanks for the picture. I never understood exactly what was meant by the round plates. It turns out I have three of these tung sol black glass round plate tubes. I also discovered I have a military boxed RCA vt-231 black glass thats actually a round plate, a tube branded American thats a round plate and four tubes branded Greylock that are also tung sol round plates. I have some jan hytron tall bottle 6sn7gt tubes that look a lot like the tall bottle sylvania vt-231's too.
I have 4 NOS NIB in large brown milatary boxes from the 40's plus about a dozen that are loose but test new. Still looking for the perfect 6SN7 line stage schematic so I can enjoy them.
The 4 NOS NIB are in brown boxes labled:U.S. NAVY

Accepted December 1942Sorry, my reason for posting waas NOT to offer them for sale, just to comment on the fact that they are out there if you have good luck.
"he fact that they are out there if you have good luck"or, if you are out there digging at Bill's every week. (dog! be glad I don't live near there. ;-)
re: Austrailia? Doubtful. that's a US Military contract number. those boxes are common...
If they aren't for sale, you can give them to me for free. I promise I won't complain :-PI have a pair in those boxes too. I believe most of that particular lot came from Australia.
I am not sure about perfect( well, yes I am, it's not...). Best I have heard with 6SN7/7N7 type though.

What type of information are you looking for? The round plate version 6SN7GT/VT-231 were made circa 1942-1945. There are two mica versions, one that is oval and one that is a full round (spanning the diameter of the glass). All have black base and partial black glass. There are many different base prints and a good deal of rebranding. The term "round plates" refers to the cross-section of each plate, which is circular (hence, each plate has a tubular structure). These tubes weren't actually rare, per se, but hunted and used to extinction due to their prized sonic attributes.
Actually, they are fairly rare, even despite the hoarding. They were only made for a few years (on 6SL7 tooling) before TS switched to different plate structure(s). The 6SL7 version came with a brown base sometimes. I just picked up a pair of the round-mica types this past weekend. The price was, (ahem)... good.
I lucked into buying about 45 of these coveted TS round plates a few years ago, all NOS boxed, all 1942 dates. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the group of these sitting together on a shelf. It skipped another beat when I saw a large box beside them that read 6SN7W - it was a 10-pack of Sylvania metal bases wrapped in old military gauze (several of which had busted metal rings however). Needless to say I did what needed to be done to procure these. (they were not boutique priced - thank god)All were fished out of a barn where they'd sat since auctioned way back when as military surplus. Since that time, I've actually bought all of the other stuff fished out of said barn - probably a lifetime or two worth of tubes. Some of these are fairly rare - VT-244 TungSol's, lots of 2A3's, 274a's, etc...
I keep waiting for the prices to go up a little more on these... oh yea, I guess they are creeping ever higher.
When they fetch $400 a pair I'll sell a pair. I need a new set of Michelin's for the Volvo....
For now I'll listen to Chet Baker sing and be content with them on the shelf... I'm actually listening to the '52 Sylvania 6SN7's right now in my pre-amp that I find to be absolutely superb.
Good luck to all in their tube hunting, it's getting tough!!!
Chet could play a pretty mean horn, but when he starts singing, well lets say thank god he could play the horn. Does this mean I am not first in line for some of those 2a3's?
Tom, I had a pair of dead mint 1942 KenRad 2a3's with the funky black glass with silver stripe and drab military boxes addressed and ready to send out to you in tomorrow's mail. I'll have to reconsider now.I know my hearing can be selective but I like Chet singing. Maybe my brain is out of tune. Not sure I can think of a better voice to help peel the clothes off the ladies. There are the weird ones that like Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen but now we are getting into truly questionable singers. I like both however.
Tom Waits is one of my favorite male singers. But like Louie Armstrong they where very much in tune. The soul of Louie or Tom put me over the top. The creative talent of Tom Waits is up there with almost anyone who has written or played a song.Sorry to beat up on the Chet man but his emotional talent came through much better through his horn. To have had Tom Waits on vocals and piano and Chet on the horn would have been really cool!!!
"Well it only a dollar step right up or The large print give it and the small print take it away." Tom is the man!!!

Or, keep 'em. We'll just wait until you die, then pick them up from *your* barn. I am sure your widow would be glad to be rid of them, cheap.
;-)
Looks like I'm gonna' hafta' make out a SECOND Will;-)
...since I'm only 34 now, depends on how my bad habits affect my longevity.Odds are good there will be some interesting things in my "barn" for my relatives to give away for practically nothing. I hope to use up my fair share of tubes before the grim reaper comes a'callin'...
My girlfriend would throw all of these tubes in the dump should I die tomorrow!
I will make sure she gets something useful...

Douglas, I'm a big fan of JB Weld, I should try to put a few back together.I've got a Cary preamp that hides the bottom of the tube anyway, I don't really care about the metal band myself. I'm a little afraid to use them because they seem to have a high mortality rate. I got another 5-6 loose from the same lot and 2 crashed very quickly. They sounded good for the day or two they lasted...
I have seen those "die" early too (noisy/crackling sounds). It turns out the solder in the pins had corroded and/or cracked. Re-soldering the pins fixed them...
Phil, now I'm a little upset that I tossed two. I do have a solder gun and can almost operate it.
saved a number of tubes I thought at first to be bad by resoldering them. Where did you throw those?ja in clear and sunny, today anyway, Tucson, AZ

1942. The boxes have beautiful dark blue printing and are of heavy construction. The tubes are blacken on the inside and they have nice round plates. I wish I had more of these.ja in clear and very sunny, Tucson, AZ
