My first KT 88 for a Quicksilver amp. I cannot find my copy of Vacuum Tube Valley where there was an article on Kt88 therefore I am lost in the jungle of tubes . Any suggestion on the makers and where is the best place to buy. Luca

The Electro-Harmonix 6550EH is a very good choice. Nice sound and good build also.

found copy of magazine. Would go for telsa.
Genelex KT88 (1969) was favorite followed in order by Tungsol 6550 (1963,grey plate, no holes), JJ KT88, Ei KT90, EH KT88, SED 6550, SED KT88, Philips/Sylvania 6550 (1970s)& Svetlana 6550 (tied), Valve Art 6550 and finally GE 6550A (1970s). Of course, these rankings should be taken with a grain of salt.
I will look for that issue....

The favorite tube was the tung sol 6550 followed by the genalex/mov kt-88. Best buy was the svetlana 6550c.I can tell you that unless you want to shell out big $ for the top off the line kt-88s the svetlana 6550c is the way to go. If I was going to shell out the dough I would still stick with the 6550 tung sol. The ge 6550 has great bass and good midrange...little rolled off up top.
I recently went through this process. The svet. 6550 c is now know as the S.E.D. 6550 "wing c"...the tube has a "c" with a wing emblem around it.
If you find that you get recommendations on the EH kt-88, I have two pairs for sale with about 100 hrs.
