I am the happy owner of a wavelength audio Sine V2 preamp. It runs two 5687 tubes. For fun I purchased a pair of JJ ECC99 tubes. My understanding is that they are a replacement for the 5687. Much to my suprise when I put them in the preamp, the tubes wouldn't even light up. No Power. Nothing. COLD.I put my trusty 5687s back in and all worked perfectly.
Any thoughts?
Richard
By the way,I purchased them from a reputable retailer who is happy to take them back for a full refund so I have no reason to think that I was sold bad tubes.
Follow Ups:
I love both tube types. The other guys are correct about why you got no function from the ECC99s plugged into 5687 sockets, but if you have the gumption to change the socket wiring in order to re-do the comparison, please let us know the results. (Of course, you will later have to change it again, if you decide you prefer the 5687.) I have always wondered how the ECC99 would stack up as a linestage tube vs 5687, 6SN7, other medium-mu, high Gm triodes. I've used them as CCSs and driver tubes with success and pleasant results. Both the 7044 and the 7119 are available rather cheaply as direct plug in replacements for the 5687, but be aware that those tubes may do better with even more current than that which is required by the 5687.
The ECC99 has a different pinout than the 5687. You would have to rewire the tube socket to try it (not recommended).
the '99 is very similar to the 5687 electrically. It is the base connection which is causing yo grief. The 7044, 7119, 6900 and of course 5687 all have the same pin-out/basing and similar heater load. at 3x the price of a NOS 5687, I wold not bother with the '99 unless I had a requirement for a 12A*7 based valve and could swing the 1.5-3x heater load...
