Seller himself isn't sure if these are rebranded current production tubes or Tung-Sol [one of the tubes is so labeled]. Link below. Help appreciated.
Follow Ups:
The shape of the bottle is wrong. Too slender where the real thing is more round. After you've looked at a number of the real vs. copies it is very (painfully?) obvious.
Seeing as how you sleuths know your business, how about *these* 6550s as supposedly manufactured by Amperex in the UK? It's my understanding that Amperex didin't manufacture 6550 tubes in the UK. Here's the link to a current auction:
Those are chinese like the others. No 6550 was ever manufactured in England--let alone by Amperex. Plates are black with holes yet Tungsols with holes have only grey plates. etc, etc, etc,
These aren't Tung Sols. They're Chinese-made 6500s. I've watched quite a few of these Chinese-made Tung Sol look alikes go on eBay for some big money - at least big money for Chinese-made Tung Sol look alikes. Then Chinese 6550s aren't necessarily a bad tube but you wouldn't want to pay NOS US-made 6550 money for them.
Thanks for your thoughts. Just out of curiousity, what tipped you off to the rebranding?
1. The collar or band is gold but should be chrome.
2. The plastic base is black but should be brown.
3. The plates are black with 3-holes per plate. Tungsol did not make a blackplate with holes. Tungsols with holes have only grey plates.
Yes, mrfixit hit two of the things that also tipped me off. Those thick washer getters are different from the light gauge wire getters of any any Tung Sol 6550. Also, the bottle and plate shapes are different from a Tung Sol, as is the arrangement of filaments and shields above the upper mica.
Two things stand out to me - the shape of the mica wings at the top of the tube and the "washer" type getter...
Got it! Thanks to you both.
