Will a Chinese made amp, Antique sound Lab AQ1006 845 22-watt SET sound better than a Jadis JA-30 with 30-watts of power? any comments? I am being offered a used Jadis JA-30 10 yrs old, should I consider it? or just stick to my planned purchase of the ASL SET. I have a few speakers to run it with so power is not an issue and besides I listen at moderate levels in a small room.
Follow Ups:
Can't comment on the Jadis but I can on the ASL DT 1006 mono blocks. The new edition of this amp is nice. I am very happy with the power and sound I get from this SET amp and knocking its "set magic" due to the larger hotter tube I think is a bum rap. Especially if you get a metal plate 845 in them. Look for new edition metal plates being produced very soon also. These are very competitively priced amps and I can recommend an excellent source for them. Go for the SET I say...
I know of 2 Defy 7s that were in a local shop for repair, but couldn't be fixed since Jadis wouldn't send a schematic or parts. (nice attitude!) Their resale value is low due to this unreliability, at least with that unit, from what I have seen.In contrast, ASL is very accessible (Joeseph Lau, the designer, posts here regularly), and I never had problems with the ASL 1006's I have.
IMHO, the 211/845 gives up nothing to lower-powered DHTs. In fact, it sounds better/bigger/stronger but with just as much detail and delicacy. A lot depends on other components, power supply, OPTs, etc.
the ASL's are a bargain, esp. on the used market.
SET amps have a "special" sound with well fleshed out images, but the ones with the big tubes (211, 845) lose a little of that magic.
Big tubes also produce a lot of heat...
If those Jadis monoblocks are anywhere near the Defy-7 then they should be extremely musical. Consider the better resale value of Jadis equipment, and you got yourself a winner!
Cannot tell you anything about the ASL, but the Jadis JA-30 is one of the best piece of machinery I've heard in my life... Have a peek at my friend's system... Wow...
