I just got my first tube amp, a Jolida JD102B integrated - it currently has all electro-harmonix tubes and uses EL84's for the power and (2) 12AT7's and (1) 12AX7 for the preamp - right now the bass sounds pretty weak, but the mids and highs sound great - does anybody have a tube suggestion to improve the bass?? I have tried this amp with a pair of Klipsch Fortes and a Altec Lansing 6 II speakers with the same weak bass results - thanks in advance - Ken

Stupid suggestion- any chance your speakers are hooked up out of phase? It might be that inside your amp, the wiring to one set of binding posts is accidentally reversed. Try reversing the connections to one speaker and see if this changes things. The Klipsch Forte's have wonderful, deep stellar base...if it's there you'll hear it.I would also ratify trying the JJ/Tesla EL84. I am using a matched quad of these on my Scott 299A. Nice tube...have had them in since Nov 2001 and still working well. The JJ/Tesla 12AX7 and 12AT7 are also very nice (I have been using them in my FM tuner).
I'm using VTL amps. I had EH 12AT7s and replaced them with Siemens ECC81s resulting in smoother and more detailed highs. Recently I replaced the Sovtek EL84s with JJ/Teslas. Amazing improvement in detail and especially bass frequencies. Highly recommended.
Try Mullard 12AX7. I bet the 12AT7s are the weak point. I simply change to another tube type with every 12AT7 that comes my way in tube gear. Others can advise on that 12AT7 tube.
