In Reply to: ARC VT-50 + AI Modulus 3a = WEAK BASS...help! posted by tube lubba on September 16, 2004 at 12:58:43:
The VT 50 is designed with the S.E.D. 6550 and has amazing bass when used with this tube. Forget about using any other output tube with this amp. I have one and the bass is about as good as it gets. It's bass sounds like the bass from a VT 100 MkII. Read a few reviews of the 100 mkII and see what they say about the bass. These amps do not respond well to output tube rolling. Don't bother with the EH 6550 in these amps. The EH is a great tube in the right amp, just not that amp. Get the "Winged C" S.E.D. and you will fall in love with that amp.
Follow Ups:
The input and driver tubes were replaced with Electro Harmonic 6922. Again about 75 hours on them. I have had a couple people tell me that the ARC may not mate well because the Audible Illusions has an inverted phase output.Could the tube have that dramatic an effect of the bass response? I had an ARC vt-60 that would have squashed the vt-50 as it operates right now. I hope it is as simple as a tube swap. What is your source for those tubes?
When you say "squashed", the VT 60 also didn't invert phase. So this would be the same. You can fix this, if it's a problem by switching you speaker leads + to - and - to +. This will invert the phase back but I don't think that is your issue. The VT 60 does have fatter less controlled bass. Two other friends of mine owned VT 60's and switched to 50's and the bass was much tighter and more powerful in all cases with the 50.
Jay,I also had a VT 60 and the VT 50 has bass that sounds very powerful and controlled in comparison. The Vt 50 sounds like it is more powerful overall as well, with the proper tubes.
I get my S.E.D.'s from the tube store. Great to do business with.
The EH 6922 sounds great in my ARC pre amp. I need to check but the input and driver tubes in a VT 50 may need to be matched? I have not replaced mine as of yet and there was some talk of rail voltage adjustments needing to be made when changing the small tubes in a VT 100 which is a very similar amp. I need to find out about this myself as it is about time to replace them here.
Any experience on this with the VT 50 out there?
