With the change from electrolytics to the ASC 100uF caps I thought I might get some areas improvement but the cleaner and more dynamic sound, of what I already thought was very great, just leaped.
I tried 2 100uF ASC 370 ac volt rated caps for the B+ with one 30uF internally right at the junction of the B+ for the opt. Ripple was slightly higher than stock at .73 on one amp and .84 on another. The sound was good and the hum was not louder than before, which is very low. So I added a third cap and the ripple dropped to .54 and the overall sound went from a little better than stock too much better. The hum is so low that your ear has to be within a few inches of the speaker to pick it up.
The snap to the music is precise and crisp. The sound is still warm but in a natural way. This is a cheap upgrade that out does much more expensive changes. The caps are external of course on an 18 inch detachable umbilical. It will be very easy to change cap if I desire, which is always fun.ja in clear and warm, Tucson, AZ

I spoke yesterday with Kirk but the units are selling well and I got the impression they really didn't care. If it isn't broke don't fix it and if people don't hear the difference because they don't have the changes to compare and are happy with what they are hearing and what they have . . .I hear more fine detail and more of the background noise of production etc., with these changes. The amp really gets down to everything that is being fed.

The 645's are next!!! Cross overs out of the box and oil caps here too. I liked the 2.5 better the KSU 1. I do not know if you have done anything to the 645's.Are the Cary's tubed rectified? choke input? If you like the oil cap sound you will probally love choke input supplies with the oil caps.
Sounds like you are having fun.
ASC's in the cross over but they sounded a bit dull. I did not give them any real time to break but it is easy to put them back in. I have last upgrade that was done for the xovers and misc changes have also been done. Solid bass and very clean in presentation.Sadly the Cary is not tube rectified but it does have a choke for the B+ and one for the front end.

They really are kinda amazing aren't they? One of those things you have to hear to buy into. Glad your ears heard changes in accordance with mine. I bet if you could find away to get them closer than that 18" of wire performance and especially ripple voltage would go down by at least one decimal point. I use a combo of 40uF, small choke, 40uF, resistor, 60uF and ended up with with only a few millivolts of ripple....as in 0.005 VAC.One idea you might consider, or at least what my friend did, was bought an extra chassis from the manufactuer(which was cheaper than we thought) and attached it to the bottom of the old chassis and ended up with a stock looking amp that had a chassis twice as deep and that gave us the room to mount things inside. Just an idea. Glad you like the change.
Now me....I'd like to try those silver supreme coupling caps but wish I could see the physical size as I need them to work with a PCB so lead spacing is an issuse. Didn't you also try out some of the high priced PIO types too?
and only teflon. I have tried other caps as well. The Silver supreme are about the same length as a Jensen pio but about half the diameter. It would be easy to insert an inductor between a couple of caps on the outboard supply but I don't want to drop much more of the voltage. I have 412 to 410 right now with 220mA of current.

A good sounding amp out of the box but some of the changes I have done elevate it to a higher performance level.ja in clear and hot, Tucson, AZ

Hi John,Thanks very much for the info. Where did you get the ASC caps? And could you possibly put up a photo at some point? I'd love to see what you've done.
but I don't have any way to post or take a picture right now. I get requests all the time for a photo of my dac and preamp etc but I just haven't taken the leap into digital, even though I am also a professional photographer.I got the 100uF ASC caps on Ebay. I contacted ASC and the 100uF were a special run. Their highest stock value right now is 60uF.

Thanks, John. Also, have you tried adding some bypasses onto the big PS electrolytics? I added a Kimber .22uF, 600 v cap onto both the PS caps, and the improvement, while not huge, is quite noticeable. Cary normally bypasses big electrolytics in their other amps -- I guess they didn't on the 6-Packs due to room, and perhaps the fact that the caps are much lower microfarad values than many of the Cary-branded amps. I used the Kimbers just 'cause I had them laying around. A better film cap might be even, um, better, but I haven't tried. There is room for them, although nowhere to tie them down (I just let them "lay" there).
DAC, Pre, Poweramp???
