Hello,I have a Cary SLA70B signature power amp with a Cary SLP50B preamp, an I'm thinking on getting the reccomended Oil Cap upgrade for both of them.
What's your opinion on this ?

I can not seem to find the schematic on the SLA 70b Sig amp anywhere for the cap upgrade? Could someone direct me so I replace the correct 4 caps. Also, are the Caps Directional at all so that I install them correctly. Thanks guys
connect to the power tubes. If you open up the bottom and look around the front you will see them on both side of the amp. Some caps have a negative marked but they can be put in either way. The Jensens have a mark towards one end and that is the end you put to the output tubes. Just be sure and note what pins you are soldering to and only take out one cap at a time unless you mark these well, since you don't have a schematic. You could draw up a simple one when you take off the bottom, noting what pins are using for the caps.I would use the Mondorf Silver Supreme oil caps. They smear the Jensens.

I also have the 70sig, but with the SLP-74 preamp, and I got the cap upgrades for both installed by my local Cary dealer. Sonically, there was a worthwhile improvement, but I really can't say much more as it was a number of years ago and I would be fictionalizing if I tried to describe the improvements.FWIW, I found the amp to be rather sensitive to the amp/preamp interconnect-meaning that the influence of that short section of wire seems to have a lot to say in the overall sonic picture. I finally settled on a custom wire that is no longer made. There might be something better out there, I just got tired of testing wires (via The Cable Company and my dealer).
FWIW, tubes I have found to work well for me are-and this was true even before I wired up for triode ops-are as follows:
1. I like the JJ E34L power tubes. Cheap, and I have had no problems with them. I also like the older Mullard/Philips EL34, but they are a bit expensive, and are not proportionately better than the JJ tubes. I also like the old Tung-Sol 6550, which has a slightly fuller, perhaps "romantic" sound compared to the JJE34L.
2. I use 5U4G or 5U4GB rectifiers. I am currently using Tung-Sol, but have used Sylvania, and RCA as well. The Svetlana's are the most beautiful, but are sonically trashy.
3. In the 6SL7 slot, I have come to prefer the old RCA VT-229, which are balanced, detailed, and very musical. They seem surprisingly plentiful for an older tube. Some folks like the old Sylvania VT-229, but I find that it is a bit too "hot" for me-trebles sound a bit thrashy. The Tung-Sol VT-229 is very musical and beguiling for me, but has a bit less natural warmth than the RCA.

I have gotten some good quality RCA VT229 off of ebay. There is a guy who lives in WA state who often has 6SL7 types, and he is very reliable, I'll try to find his name. But you will find them in many other auctions. Good Luck bidding against me!
I am in on some caps if someone could tell me how many and where they go, I have the Cary SLA 70b SIG as well.
The SLA70 uses 4 0.22uF caps. As to where they go, the upgrade from Cary includes a diagram on what caps that will be replaced.Pricewise, the asking price is reasonable - approximately the same as what Jenssen themselves wanted when I was looking for caps for a speaker X-over.

I had the Jensen .22uF 630 vdc paper copper in oil coupling caps put into my SLAM 100s a few years back and actually love the sound when the amps are working. I seem to be blowing coupling caps however and I don't blame the Jensens. This last break down, I bought some Jupiter .22uF 600 vdc beeswax coupling caps to just try something different, but I blew all four in the one dead amp and never did get to listen to them, but many love these au natural caps too.Cary charges either $40 or $50 per Jensen, but you can find them on the net for $16-$18 per cap, so if you are handy with a soldering gun, they aren't too tricky to install yourself and you can get both the Jensens and the Jupiters for the price for what Cary charges and you can play around with them.

Question: How valuable is having matched quads?
I haven't opened up my 3 SLAMS, yet. They supposedly all have the oil cap upgrade, but having grown up in Missouri, I'm a "show-me" kind of person.

I might be good for a few of them. Need at least 2. Let me know..22uF 630 paper/copper in oil with silver leads is what I would want. The gold ones.

Chris.....Kirk says that they had probs with the Jensen caps about 3-4 years ago (when our SLAMS were made).....but all of the new Jensens are working fine. I blew two of my OEM caps,..and another buddy blew one. I suggest replacing all orig Jensens with new ones....and that is easy to do as you mentioned. That way they'll stop blowing one at a time...causing a LOT of frustration as you well know....I would certainly like to ask Angela if their Jensens for 13.50 each are fresh stock...and not 3 year old stock....which would have the same issues as the ones we've had trouble with.
I might be up for 4 or 5, so if you check into it, let me know. I know that at least 3 of my 4 Jensens are a few years old.Thanks, Chris

I had Cary-recommended oil caps installed in my CAD-300B (push-pull) amp and think it's a worthwhile upgrade. Benefits are improved dynamics and a more open, airier presentation. How much of a difference to expect is largely system dependent, but I would do it again. IMHO, Kirk knows these amps as well or better than anyone and I have found his suggestions to be right on.
Well - seems like I have to cough up, then...I'll have to wait a month, though. I just bought some new (used) speakers (Kef R107/2), and I discovered that they did not go well with my current speaker cables at all, so I needed some new cable as well.
