Hey Guys,
Can anyone help, I've got a problem again....??Ok where do I start?
Got a pair of MMG's a few months back, they sounded pretty awful out the box (new generation crossovers quite bad). I was waiting for my tube amp to come, in the meantime I had to run them with my little 45watt Arcam Alpha solid state. The amp was having a particularly hard time driving them and this was apparent when listening, they sounded like giant walkman speakers almost. Anyway eventually my tube amp arrived and I hooked it up (Nelson Audio Integrated 55w push pull 66lb weight, from FSAudioweb)Holy cow, yep this was it they were now being driven with something that really had some balls, and even though the junky crossover was still apparent (theres a big suck out in the bass to midrange) I was pretty pleased with my new amp, it was a much fuller sound, deeper, more slam etcThen I decided to build some better crossovers for the MMG's and I actually built the hot rodded MG12 crossover. Well somehow in the process I must have had a short and I damaged the tube amp?? So I had to send it back for repairs.
Anyway, I had now to run them with my little solid state Arcam again, And was very pleased at what a difference the new crossovers were making.
They were MUCH easier to drive (and this amp was REALLY struggling before), and the little amp was finding it really easy to produce gobloads of very good bass out of the maggies. So now I was starting to get excited...
Before modding the crossovers my solid state amp was making the speakers sound like a transistor radio, ie no balls.
But my tube amp 55w was really making them sing. So now I'm waiting for my tube amp to get back from repairs, and I'm thinking what is it going to sound like if this little solid state can drive them like this??Well, I finally got it back yesterday.
Hooked everything up and was very dissapointed....The exact reverse is now happening? The little solid state is making all the bass and making the maggies sing, and now the (66lb 55w tube amp) is sounding positively wimpy??
I have to turn the volume pot much further and still, no balls...What the heck is going on,??
Have I produced an anomally with these new crossovers?Any ideas?
Sonicaps 33.1uf in the high pass, 51uf for the low/shunt and 2.7mh Alpha Goertz (big) 12awg foil inductors.

FraserI would echo the response you got on the planar asylum.
Use the 8 ohm tap with Zero Autotransformers at the 3X tap.
The Zero's help because Maggies are known to need current
to sound their best and with the stepdown you are getting
more current available at each volume/voltage setting.
They prefer a ~3 ohm tap minimum and
in the above configuration you would get a 2.67 ohm tap.
You could try the 4X tap for grins.
I can't answer your question, but I can say that I've had very little luck driving stock MMGs well with 40W tube amps. The things are just so ineffecient. I get horrible bass response, too, maybe unrelated...but they seem to roll off like crazy by 50Hz.
But I'm too busy puking.-Henry
...you must be VERY short of death for all the semiliteracy that is passed off as good writing in magazines and newspapers.
Well Henry, I've got to say...It's pretty damned ironic when a yank "attempts" to correct an Englishman on the correct usage of the Queens English...
The thing is you can argue till you're blue in the face dude...But just remember, you really haven't got bloody a clue what you're talking about...
Wow, you really are confused.Anyway, the Apostrophe Protection Society is located in England.
OK, ok...I'd just got back from work... it's bloody hot down here in the south..
Anyway, "automagically" I get a load of crap from triode condom and then I read from you... So you got the tail end of my ire
As to the conjugation of my maggies...
Is there gona be a special interest group that wishes to preserve the right to spell color with a "U". Maybe another one to preserve the flat earth society and of course those who want to vindicate John Wilkes Booth. There's room in this world even for Wolverines! Lord, strike a match! Ray Hughes

...a group advocating the reproduction of sound using vacuum tubes and vinyl records. Now that is definitely subversive.Say, if you're worried about the Apostrophe Protection Society, then these guys (below) ought to have you in a state of total apoplexy.

It's going to take a cultural revolution. Parents as well as teachers, as well as "educationists" being totally re-schooled. We may never recover! Oh well, we can get our engineers and scientists from other countries as immigrants. "After all, somebody has to stoke the furmaces." Ray Hughes

Careful Ray, Henry's one a them lib'rals...

Google disassemble and Bush.
Google "kool-aid".
I keep getting Jim Jones, George Bush, and Tony George.
Yawn..It's made up....

Triode? I came here for some friendly advice. From the guys here that have a pretty good technical grasp on tube amps.
In the hope that someone could throw some light on my problem. It seems to me that you really have got some aggresive territorial issues, you've attacked me incessantly just for coming here.
Ok, so this is a forum for DIY Tube people.
let me put it like this. If I went to a garage asking for some advice would the mechanics verbally attack me because I don't build cars? You really are a prize biscuit.
But hey, thats just coming from an interloper.

And it has little or nothing to do with Tube DIY. You couldn't even fix the amp yourself.
Another very intelligent reply.....Where did you learn to read?
Maybe it's attention deficit?
Maybe you should pull you head out from your behind!THE AMP IS UNDER WARRANTY......
(That means I don't go fu--ink around inside)
The guys over at the planer forum here might have some good answers for you.
John......
