In Reply to: Good, High Bias 120 m. tapes??? posted by djr33 on March 21, 2007 at 17:43:07:
120 minutes are extremely thin and many cassette deck manufacturers advise against use 120 min tape in their decks.
I believe this is true - we should not use anything longer than 100 minutes, 110 minutes with care.
There are Maxell XL-IIS 100, not bad but nothing to be proud of.
metal tapes in the car- they'd get eaten, just like the old 8-tracks used to...
What's the matter with Maxell XLII-S 100's? I have used these tapes for years with no problem.

Keith, old XL-IIS were made in Japan. The ones still available are made in England and they are of inconsistent quality and I would not recommend them to anyone. It is hit and miss, even within the same batch. I toss out approx. two or three out of twenty. one of five. You have to test every tape before use, and be ready to dub again if needed. I've bought them dirt cheap but IMHO not worth the hassle.
Are the latest generation of TDK SA-X (even though discontinued like XLII-S) of better quality than XLII-S?Have you had a chance to use the latest generation of TDK SA-X?I think the last year for both was 2001.Peace..

Yes, I have used SA-X in brownish wrapper, they are excellent, both C-60 and C-90.TDK SA-90 Made in Thailand in royal blue wrapper are better to be avoided.
