I like to move my speakers out for critical listening and back up against the wall when not in use. I've had trouble keeping the spikes on those little brass disks; they tend to fall off them and poke little holes in my laminate floor. On a whim, I went to my local hardware store and purchased cap (or "acorn") nuts. They allow me to move the speakers easily, don't come off like the brass disks and seem to maintain that "coupled to the floor" advantage of spikes. Plus they're like 49 to 89 cents at Home Depot depending on size.
Anyone else try these? Thoughts? Am I truly going "nuts"???
Follow Ups:
My floors are hardwood and I also need to pull the speakers out to listen to them (WAF and traffic patterns in the room). I found some nylon screws of the appropriate size. They don't hold a lot of weight when extended and may bend, but if you add a nylon nut to them and screw them down pretty close to the speaker bottom (only extend what you need for balancing) they are damn soli. They allow me to easily slide my speakers across the floor without any marks. One tip - I've marked my floor with little tiny marks so I can easily reposition my speakers each time. However, make sure you are certain before you make these marks. Get out the tape measure and give some good, long listens to make sure your inage is stable and centered. 1/2" does indeed make a difference.
I wish i saw your post before i bought spikes for my subwoofer project. $20 gone forever. Great idea!
So I'm out the 20 clams PLUS what I paid for the cap nuts! (The sub is upstairs on a hardwood floor as part of my home theater.) Thanks for the kind words.
