Hi all!
I'm a newbie about to embark on the long journey to hi-fi nirvana. I've been following this forum for a couple of days now. Lotsa helpful information here. I'm looking to set up a modest "beginner system" to be placed in my bedroom [no place else :( ]and am currently agonising about speaker selection. I figure that at my current budget level (trying to keep it within US$1K), i'm better off getting a good pair of speakers and work around those.
I'm currently considering either a new Acoustic Energy Evo 1 or a 2nd hand Acoustic Energy Aegeis 2 (flr-standers). What do you guys think? Do you have any other suggs?
I listen to lotsa jazz & vocals, and a bit of slow rock stuff. & I hate my music to sound too bright/hard.
Suggestions for matching components would also be most helpful :)
For the CDP, i'm kinda set on the updated NAD C521i. I heard it & its got lotsa detail for its price.
Follow Ups:
Fred;
Do a search here on the JM Reynaud Twins. Think they'll do the trick, simply gorgeous for the $$ IMHO. The former distributor, RandyB, posts here and has some left overs at great prices.Source, have an NAD 521, and ended up buying an MSB DAC for it. Suggest you go over to HiRez and do a search on the Sony 222 SACD player (or the 775). For the money (after a LONGGGG break-in), very good redbook player. And you get SACD and multichannel capability thrown in for free. If you're feeling adventurous, go to the Digital board and check out the Ah! cdp's. Tubed, get very good recs.
Freddy: Sorry, but I don't know where you are and what gear is available and at what cost. I would urge you, however, to pay attention to your source. Cannot say the NAD is no good since I have not heard it, but be sure to look around. Try something like the Cambridge Audio 300 as well, for example. (I was quite impressed by it (for the price), but went for the 500 instead). It is generally accepted that source has more impact on musical satisfaction than speakerd (within reason, of course). Get a good integrated amp, build up some DIY cables, get a decent set of speakers (used if you need to fit into the budget). And keep a few dollars to buy music to listen to! Happy listening!
hey guys,
thanks for the advice! i was actually thinking of whether to spend more on the cdp or speakers. i'll go check out the cambridge audio cdp soon.
B&W DM601 or DM303 are sort of between Kef's and something bright like Monitor Audio's. Just get a smoother amp like NAD or Musical Fidelity and you should be okay. I like the Marantz DR-4050 better than NAD and it's only $229 here:http://wwww.accessories4less.com
I got this for a friend and works great. Burns CD's too. Marantz has historically had a better reputation than NAD. NAD has better amplifiers.
For reviews use the search function here at AA or try:
http://www.ecoustics.com and enter the speaker of your choice.
Nothing wrong with your choice, but I'll give you a few others to consider - Sound Dynamics RT3, Wharfdale Diamond 8.2, Athena B2, S1, Kef Cresta 2,
