The Maggies are by far the more accurate, and detailed speaker, but less dynamic than the VMPS. The 1.6 sounds wide open and natural versus a somewhat colored VMPS sound.VMPS does have stronger bass, if somewhat boxy sounding versus the tight bass of the Maggies - though a bit light in that area (especially below 40Hz)!
VMPS does have some ardent supporters that swear by the speakers...so they must be hearing something good!
Follow Ups:
I am at present owning a pair of RM1 neo and find them to be just average in all areas. The midrange is the strongest quality of VMPS spks, very acurate fast and detail. I was not very impressed with the high freq response. It just dosent have the air. Regarding the Bass, this is where I find them to be most objectional. I have tried for the past 3 months trying to adjust the PR tuning but I havent found the optimal setting. The mid bass is too boomy and cannot control it in my room.
I guess the 626R dose not have a PR hence it would be more easy. Looks like the RM40 is the best pick and RM1 the ugly duckling of VMPS.
I have heard the Maggie 1.6 and they sounded great with limited bass, but good quality bass. Unfortunately they are too big for my room.
Are you comparing the RM1/RM2 neos to the Maggie 1.6s? The neo line (626/RM1/RM2/RM40) are the current hot speakers from VMPS.
The RM1. I assumed the closest price range.I will say that the RM1 move more air than the Maggies...not the best choice of words, but the sense of "livliness" is better reproduced by the VMPS. Still not a fan of the VMPS bass though.
have user adjustable bass tuning. Getting it right for a given room/placement and front end gear is a very exacting and time consuming process, but is very satisfying when right. You may not have heard a fully optimized setup. The best bass ever in my home was a pair of optimized VMPS subs.
I have heard similar statements...so your are likely correct! I do admit that the 40's have a great sound!
