My son is leaving for college in about a month. He has a single-occupancy dorm room, about 11X13 in size. Sending him with my old Yamaha CR-620 receiver (40W/ch). Should be plenty-o-power for a dorm room and it is clean power from my experience. A question. What small monitor speakers for about, say, $300 USED would anyone recommend for this application? Unlike many young folks, he is into sound clarity as opposed to the "dirty thump" of the boom box set....
Follow Ups:
These will impress his fellow dormmates with their technological "wow" factor, take up very little space, are down -3 db at 45 Hz, are pretty sensitive @ 91 db/2.83V/1 meter, and have a smooth, detailed and non-fatiguing sound. I have their big brothers, the Q3s, and absolutely love them. Should be available online in your price range.
No idea why that one from KEF's website didn't come through . . .
I remember my first semester in college when I bought my Kenwood integrated amp, Technics turntable and some no-name speakers. My Dad's response was "You don't need no god-dam stereo to go to college". In his defense, I did use some of my "education" money my parents gave me to buy the gear. Anyway, I hope your son appreciates his Dad supporting his hi-fi desires. I have some Paradigm Atom speakers that are amazing at a cost of $180 new. Nice soundstage and clarity - given the price point.
If you can find a pair of Totem Mites and squeeze them into the budget, give a listen.....
Great sound, and the Kevlar woofer will impress the non-audio types. The 602S2 have enough low end to not need a sub in a small room. They have rubber surrounds so foam rot will not be an issue. They both are sensitive enough to not stress the Yamaha. As far as the 600 series go, many say that the as teh series number goes up from the original 600 -> series 2 -> series 3 that the sound gets more refined, but more analytical. That being said, a set of series 1 b&w's (They have a copper ring over the tweeter) may be a good bet as well. The new series 3 will be out of your range.
And add Axiom M3ti and M22ti new. If you can afford it, the M22ti is a better speaker. Overall, the best deal might be a pair of Atoms and a pair of Grado headphones in case he wants to listen late and there is a lot of noise bleed between rooms. I've got the SR125's, and they're great. Easy to drive and sound fantastic.

You might try these original Linn Kans. I have no relation to the seller, and they are very good speakers.

I have a Yamaha CR-620 driving a set of Paradigm Mini Monitors right now and to my ears to sounds pretty good. A set can be had for 350 new and less for a used pair..
