In Reply to: Regadless price , could somebody compare Merlin VMS-SE to JMR , Offrande . posted by The FISH on July 27, 2002 at 04:42:43:
... read Bob Neill's review of JMR Offrande on www.enjoythemusic.com and use his beloved Harbeth as an analogy of Merlin.
Follow Ups:
Depending on the system of course, I would put the Merlin somewhat to the right (more insistent, assertive) than any of the Harbeths; but yes, both are to the right of the Offrandes, at least the re-voiced Offrrandes, which have been on the market for nearly a year now. I have not heard Merlins with all-tube or OTL amps, so it is possible tubes would bring them back a step or two. I heard them on Blue Circle BC 2.1 hybrid monoblocks.
I'm sorry,I don't know what you mean by "off to the right." Could you please explain?
I thought I was being pretty explicit, guess not. I think of the speaker spectrum as being warmer and more euphonic moving to the left, cooler, more detailed, then insistent and assertive moving to the right. I found, on one hearing, that Merlins were a bit more insistent, assertive than I have since found Harbeths. And I find Harbeths a bit more assertive (with Harbeths, I'd call it direct) than Spendors. Reynauds, the newer ones, can sound like Spendors though, as I've said elsewhere, I find them a little less transparent, less clear, more opaque. So I guess, now that I've trapped myself on this simple-minded graph, I might put the Reynauds I've heard to the left of Spendors, though they're enough alike that amps, etc. can make the difference. Okay?
as you go more towards the right side of the keys,
you go up on the frequencies/scales. ie: ligher and thinner
tone opposed to heavy and lower frequencies on
the left.I reckon Bob thinks Merlins are tonaly thinner compared
to his Harbeth.
