I appreciate the suggestion. I did hear both the 1.5 and the D15 but didn't care for either. The 2.5 is better all around, to my ears, not just in the bass. If I were going to add a sub, I would rather just get the Thiels, which had no bass deficiency in my room and were plenty pleasing otherwise, just not musical magic for me.Any chance you've heard either of the smaller Joseph Audio floorstanders? I could probably manage to audition those at a dealer where I've never been, and they've had some raves.
Follow Ups:
I would suggest checking out any speaker you can get your hands on. I have not heard the Joseph's. Did you check out the MEADOWLARK Herons, JMR Evolution 3, KRIX Esoterix or NOVA Applause? If you can land an audition with one of those,it might compete well against the ProAc's. Best of Luck!
kmikey;
Go to the VMPS site, they reprint the Listener mag $3000 speaker comparison. Some great brands described, as mentioned above. The JMR Evo3 might be right up your alley. The VMPS 'won', which is why they reprint the article, but seems quite fiddly to me to dial it in. Check out the review, though.http://www.vmpsaudio.com/listener.htm
Amps? Audio Advisor is selling Marsh amps now, with a 30 day return priviledge. Have a 150wpc amp for $1500. Might check that out.
I haven't heard the Herons but would like to, since I like the Shearwaters tonally (I have never liked the Kestrels). The dealer doesn't have them. I have heard the Nova Applause and liked it very much in the shop, but it's a little large for my room. I had wondered about the Bravos but, again, the dealer doesn't have them. Have you heard them?I don't know anything about the others you mentioned--JMR Evolution 3, KRIX Esoterix--actually haven't heard of them.
Since I am NOW realizing that footprint is an issue, the Herons and Esoterix might not work for you. I have not heard the Bravos but they LOOK like mimics of the ProAc 2.5. The JMR ( Jean Marie Reynaud)is considered by some people I have talked to be a very musical speaker. If you find a dealer near you go check them out. Another speaker that comes to mind is the Soliloquy 6.3(www.solspeak.com).
Actually, the depth of the speaker isn't so much the issue as the width. The Vandersteens just plain block out the sun! A deeper speaker doesn't, necessarily.There's a dealer in Chicago that does, or did, carry Soliloquys, but they didn't suggest them last time I was there. I'll ask.
The Bravo does look much like the ProAc 2.5, as the Applause looks rather like the 3.5/3.8. The Applause seemed quite open and relatively efficient, so I wondered if the Bravo shared those qualities, with maybe less physical and aural volume.
I appreciate your suggestions.
here is link to a review on the Soliloquy speaker. Despite what your dealer says I think you should try them. Please keep in mind that they need a 400hr break-in. Otherwise your not going to get a fair accessment of them.
