Good evening, when a company says that their speaker should be a specified distance from the wall, say for instance two feet do you measure it two feet out to the rear of the speaker or do they mean two feet out to the front of the speaker? Thanks for any info, John.

what a good question! i have no earthy idea as to the answer. i've always assumed that it meant the rear of the speaker (providing it was rear ported). now i feel like a total novice.i wish that some of the lurkers (speaker manufacturer technical types) on this site would give us a real answer, not the boom box pundits!
My understanding in talking with various speaker manufacturers and retailers is that all distances are from the tweeter. On some speakers, the measurement from the back versus the tweeter is very big.Dave
I re-read my manual the other day (Synthesis LM250). It says to start with the speakers 18-24 inches from the wall. I interpret this to mean 18-24 inches between the wall and the back of the speaker, mainly because the drivers are not visible unless you remove a grill, and they don't say you must do that to position the speakers. Also, the speakers are 11" square, so positioning the tweeter (set in about 3" from the front face) 18" from the wall would leave about 10" clear space, not enough. 18" to the speaker face would be 7" from the wall.Remember, the recommended placement is only meant as a starting point. Adjustment in or out will change the sound, and you should fiddle until you like it best.
