Can anyone recommend a Great DIY Speaker? I went to look at new speakers & was not inspired (wayy too much money). The last new speakers I bought were Missions-over 10 years ago. I'm looking for a DIY that can get into the 40-50 hz region, $500 or less for the drivers, x-overs. I've got a friend with a full woodworking shop. Thank You for your suggestions.

At www.zalytron.com under premium speakers:The Trym is a 2 way, 2 driver
loudspeaker kit utilizing the latest
driver technology from the SEAS Excel
product line. This kit uses a single W22EX001
22cm woofer and a T 25 CF OO2 "MILLENNIUM"
tweeter. It was designed to be relatively easy and economical
to build, while still providing the very highest level of acoustical
performance. The cabinet is a bass reflex design with 34 litre volume. A 70 mm
diameter PVC tube with 190 mm length, is positioned beneath the
woofer and exits at the front baffle. The bass system utilizes a
sub-chebychev filter alignment with a tuning frequency of 34Hz.
The crossover network is conventional except for a parallel cicuit
which supresses the response peak due to the magnesium cone.
The crossover frequency is 1.6kHz.The Trym was designed by Murray Zeligman, who was also designed the new FROY Mk 3 kit.
He offers the following comments on this system:
"A 2-way design with a 22cm woofer presents unique design challenges. Special attention was paid to the design of the crossover network in order to achieve a smooth transition between woofer and tweeter, while still maintaining a good power response. A great deal of experimentation and listening was done on this design before the final crossover network was chosen. I would characterize the sound of this system as smooth and involving"

Dear Ernie,
Another site that has many design plans is: www.audiocomponents.nl
When you get into their site, just click on Vifa or Scan Speak, where you will automatically be redirected to another site. One of the best looking designs to me is the Vifa 22XT, this design uses two 5 inch Vifa PL mid bass drivers and their new XT ring radiator tweeter. This speaker should be very musical and just disapear, the parts price should be around $300.00 US.
I hope this helps with the large array of kits that you have to look at.

PS. Audio components does not sell the crossover components, but you should be able to down load the plans and get every thing from Madisound or who ever you wish.
I built folded TQWP's (Voigt pipe) with 8" Pioneer fullrange drivers. Bass solid and clean down to 40Hz, no crossover needed, very coherant sound. Horn loaded bass needs to be heard to realise just how clean bass can be. Costs about $150 total. Do a search on high efficiency asylum and fullrange driver forum for details and all the tweeks.

The Okara II's from North Creek Music (www.northcreekmusic.com) are close to your target price. They'll be pretty rolled-off by 40 Hz but properly tuned, these things can SING! Revealing, but even so-so recordings are reproduced with some drama and emotional impact.Very satisfying speakers overall. I'd also be keen to try out North Creek's Rhythm Revelator and the Oris horn kit offered by Ron Welborne, but they will break your budget pretty thoroughly ;-)
It's part of the Forums and no one has mentioned the Pi Speakers? $500 will get you the Eminence drivers and crossovers and Wayne Parhams patient handholding. Of course you'll have to give up being an audiophile and just tap your foot to the music.
Come join us at the Pi Asylum.
You should check out northcreekmusic.com. These guys put together kits using top level drivers and, most importantly, top quality crossover designs and parts. Worth looking into. (I purchased the inductors I used to rebuild my crossovers from them and am very pleased.
Try the LDSG index at: http://www.snippets.org/ldsg/intro.php3This will give you the most info on many kits side by side.
You really have to give more info since we don't know what your tastes are. I have not heard most of these but they generally get the best press. My DIY list if I were kitting:
ACI Jaguar with Titan LE
MB-1 from murphyblaster.com
STS from Selah
North Creek
GR ResearchP
Similar to this, living room 15x15 (this is the main room)+ dining room 15x10,kit 15x15 & nook 15x9 , open cathedral ceiling (14' at the dining/kitchen wall-this dividing wall is 8', open above), mainfloor of a bi-level.
I like vocals Teddy Pendergast, easy listening-piano music, jazz- Ella, Count, George Benson, etc& light rock-Chicago, R&B/Soul-Temptations, Earth Wind&Fire. Quite a mix, but No head banging Hard Rock. I've got solid state & tubes.
I've been to their website, nothing on kits for sometime. Must have ditched DIY.
Subwoofers.com is another company that Mike Dzurko is involved with and it seems he has turned the DIY over to it.
Thanks Tom, I'll check it out.
I can not reccomend these speakers on my personal experience, but they have recieved alot of praises from members here, do a search.
I only sugggest that you take them into concideration before making a final decission. I feel that the AVinci DIY line look good for your buget.

Good luck

These items are needed be the speakers commercial or kit.
Lacking any other info, you can try any of these as most meet the sub $500 mark.
Get in touch with Roberthttp://www.audioasylum.com/audio/speakers/messages/70459.html
He made me a pair of these and they sound VERY nice - a non resonant design that looks unobtrusive, has and a very effective and smooth sub + a small footprint.
You will need to email Robert direct as he tells me the plans will NOT be published anywhere.

Peace at AA
Try GR Research.Ive been listening at home to the paradox 3 and I think its a great speaker.Hard to beat for the price but the general consensus seems to be that all the GR offering are very good both in value and in performence
