...ones. That said, and amp like a Pass Aleph 3 or CJ MV-52 could work well IMO. What other gear are you running? A tubed pre like an older CJ or Cary could provide what you have been missing. Maybe, like you say, the CDMs are just not for you.
Follow Ups:
I have some old stuff that I wanted to upgrade now (old Arcam Alpha 3 integrated, Micromega Junior CDP). I know that they are not in the same class as the speakers, so I started borrowing good quality integrated amps mentioned in the original post. I also have Magnum Dynalab FT101-A (recently realligned and brought up to specs by Magnum Dynalab) that I intend to keep. I also planned to buy a good CDP like Arcam Diva CD92 (originally wanted Musical Fidelity A3CD but found it was too cold and clinical for me when I borrowed it).I too thought about tubes but the problem with CDM1SE is that it lacks what I would call 'basic clarity', a property that is required when mating with tubes if one is to avoid too dull a sound. My experience with Audio Analogue Pucinni is exactly that - there was smoothness and richness but no 'light from within' - too lush. Funny enough, Classe CAP-101 was almost 'it' - it was fast and moved CDM1SE with ease while still retaining smoothness and warmth. But I kept thinking that there was persistent coloration, a 'rose tint' to the sound that stayed regardless of the recording.
Arcam A85 was a very good match, but my desire to change is based on the realisation that all the amps and sources I tried can only modify the sound around the basic parameters set by the speakers.
Just to add that I was on the verge of going with CAP-101, but I am scared away by the fact that CAP-101 gets very hot even when idle.I called Classe and they told me that although CAP-101 is AB class, they biased it somewhat more into A class then usual, resulting in increased idle current (and heat) for better sound. After an hour or so, one cannot hold a hand on the top of the amp longer than about three seconds. After my halogen lamp, my computer and my 19'' display, I don't need another thing that heats my small room up :-).
This issue has cropped up before on these pages; this is just to answer questions of type 'if you liked Classe the most, why didn't you buy it'.
...I feel that B&W speaker have excellent clarity, and most Classe' gear I have audiotioned seemed to sound kind of strange and just not right to me.
Actually, we don't - B&W do have clarity (although newer B&W with Nautilus tweeter have more of it than the older ones). I simply said that in my small room, Classe worked the best in that it pushed B&W without effort while at the same time being lean. The fact that it was lean in bass cured the bass hump problem. But I didn't buy it. You are right, it has a combination of a rose tint coloration and some MOSFET haze - it lacked bell-like clarity that B&W require.
