In Reply to: Hyperion: How much power to satisfy SF GP? posted by MM on September 30, 2001 at 21:25:30:
GP or GPH? How much power you need depends on the size of the room and the kind of music you listen to. 150 sq. ft is not too big and is nearly baseline for the GP's bass output so 50 to 100W should do it. Of course do take in mind that bigger tube amps (esp monoblocks) usually result to more bass and better dynamics. Unfortunately, as you already know, big tube amps are not cheap and they are most likely a lot more expensive than the GP itself.
Follow Ups:
I mean the original GP. When playing SACD peak dynamics, the speakers sound a bit strained with 75W of tube power, i.e. the soundstage moves forward or shrinks in size. Is it the amp or the speakers to blame? Suggestions for upgrade?
Its probably due to both limitations of the speaker and amp. And most likely the recording itself. Have you tried adding a sub yet? A sub shall make the GP sound a lot more authoritative and powerful.
I mean 1812 and the like...
