Howdy
I've been running my Vienna Acoustics Haydn speakers with the grills off for a little while now. Last night I noticed that the drivers were moving about 3/4" during the cannon shots in the 1812 Overture. (Still sounded great.) I realized that I've played that selection and a few others at higher levels at times in the past and it got me wondering:Am I abusing them? Put another way, how much can a 5 1/4" driver take?

P.S. My system is registered, but in any case I'm driving them with a SimAudio Moon I-5.

Ted-Glad to hear that you are having fun with your system. You'll know when you are clearly abusing your Haydns, because they will start making some very un-musical sounds not unlike a loud pop. They are some pretty marvelous speakers considering their size, but I'm sure you realize that even a marvelous 5 1/4" driver can only reproduce so much of a recorded howitzer shot.
Good Listening,

As long as the cannon shots still sound like cannon shots, you're probably okay. If it sounds like someone's banging your speakers from inside, you're probably getting into trouble. That's the sound of your drivers excursion exceeding its range of operation.BTW, it's really cool watching the woofers on my speakers bounce around on those cannon shots.
It is a very difficult passage for any speaker/amp combo. Play it at low levels so that you can prorect your gear. I am not surprised about the extreme woofer excursion you've observed. Key is the amp. If it can provide power without clippling.Good Luck!
