Does one sound better than the other? Or is the difference negligable? Question related to subwoofer application.
Follow Ups:
If you're talking about an octave band graphic equalizer, go real easy. Above about 6 dB (5.7 dB theoretically) of boost, the Q of the variable filters on an EQ is high enough to cause ringing. If you're using something else for EQ you can still get into the same problem. I found it on a Velodyne CT-100 (later version) subwoofer where they apparently used a boost in their circuitry to extend the range. Anyway they used too much and it would ring on strong bass notes. Not at all musical.Less is better in just about every respect.
If your present sub doesn't give enough bass or not low enough bass, and you've tried repositioning to every conceivable location; then I would suggest either getting a second sub, or getting a better sub.
Go easy. If you're talking about boosting the extreme lows to gain extension you can quickly run out of woofer excursion or amplifier power. Distortion can go up quickly and it is possible to to damage an otherwise "safe" system. Same thing if you're trying to fill a "hole" in your room response, almost impossible to do with eq.
If you have to use EQ, the answer is to use the "right" amount. Use too little, there will be no effect...too much, imbalance of the audo spectrum.I use a Marchand Bassis to extend the range of my subwoofers, & it took weeks of measuring, moving, adjusting, & listening to get the sound just right.
