Hi, I am thinking about adding a subwoofer to my Thiel CS2.3's. I probably would use it only 20% of the time, when listening to for want of a better word 'techno' (specifically drum and bass or UK Garage) with massive sub-bass content that goes missing on the Thiels, which are otherwise great. Anybody tried REL or others with Thiels? I figure I can buy the CS7.2's but they're a little big for my room and much more expensive than a small subwoofer. Thanks.

If you get the right sub and set it up correctly, you'll want to use it 100% of the time. The two subs that meet my personal criteria are the RELs and the ACI Titan IIs. The Titan II being my choice because it offers equal or better performance at less cost. Yes, I have directly compared them. Using ACIs passive high-pass filters will reduce the low frequency load on your main amps and the Thiels. You'll find that not only will the low bass be improved, but the upperbass and lower midrange as well. It is also likely that you will find a larger, more ambient soundstage. Not subtle improvements, major improvments.
my main speakers used to be thiel 3.5's (now they're in the kitchen). these speakers, -2db down at 20 hz, were greatly helped when i went to a subwoofer system w/a pair of larger vmps subs & marchand active x-over. not yust for *techno*-type toons, but for all music - the thiels yust had an easier time of it. if not having a lot of room is an issue, then i'd recommend either the vmps original, or even the smaller subs. all the vmps upgrades are a must. dual woice-coil option is awailable, if ya wanna use only one sub. for the money, even considering the price of another amp & the x-over, yule get much cleaner, tuneful, transparent sound, top-to-bottom, w/this arrangement, compared to a powered sub such as a rel. higher, less-distorted spl's, too.ymmv,

A sub with the 2.3s is a great idea - for 20% of the time I would not bother with stereo subs. The REL is a good choice with the crossover at 35 to 40Hz. The Vandersteen 2wq is also a good option, and I'll bet you find yourself using it more than 20% of the time.
I tend to think that the vandy cleans up the mid bass on the Thiels adding to the Thiels lightning fast response and clarity...and the bass is tight and ultra fast.
