I've not given up on the Spendors. I think there wonderful. I do however, have a chance to purchase a pair of 6 month old Tablette's at a very atractive price. I know and love the Response series of ProAc's but I don't really know much about the Tablette's. Sam Telling reviewed the Signature 2000's in Stereophille calling them "a meat and potatoes" kind of speaker. I have no idea what the hell he's talking about. I have not been able to find much info on the Tablette other than whats on ProAc's website. I'd like to hear others opinion on the speaker as I don't really have any good way of listening prior to purchase. [no local dealer] As for the Spendor's, I don't see why I can't have both. ;]

So do you think the Spendor's live up to the mantle of "best small speaker made" as offered by certain reviewers? Is there anything you don't like about them, aside from the obvious lack of bass because of their tiny size? Can you post a short review of what you hear from them, maybe compare them to other speakers you've had. Just curious. Thanks.Dave A.
Frankly, I have no idea what the "best small speaker made" is or even should be. As far as the Spendor's, yes, there very good. Open, transparent midrange, extended clean treble, better bass than you might think. If you like vocals, chamber music, acoustic, ect., they rule. If you like rock or want to listen loud, look elsewhere. One thing I've noticed about the Spendors that I've not heard in other speakers is HOW they get louder. It's weird. They seem to just become more there as you crank it up as oppossed to getting "louder" per say. I think its due to how clean the mid-range is. In this aspect, the Spendor is unique. [at least in my experiance] What I'm not getting with the Spendor's is bottom end presence. It's just not there. They go low enough to enjoy music without the need for a subwoofer but they don't provide a convincing foundation to the music. For instance, I'm very fond of Paradigm speakers. I've owned servral models over the years. Paradigm's give you ample, clean, tight bottom end. In every other area, the S3/5's smoke my studio 40's. And yes, the Studio 40's are very, very good speakers. Their also too big for my bedroom system. I'm wondering if the ProAc's would have the open, clear mid's and high's of the Spendor's with the bass response of the Paradigms and a size somewhere inbetween? I've also owned a couple pairs of Totem's over the years and beleive them to be exceptional speakers. Full range sound, little stand mount size, thats what I want.
What's up Mer.I have heard some of the Proac models(tablet 2000,1SC) and they are nice but overpriced. The Spendor S3/5 is a much better speaker. If you want more gusto in the bottom end and overall ease in the total sound buy a cheap sub.The key is to dial the sub in right. The sub I have heard and liked for a cheap price was the polk PS250(their smallest sub).Very musical. The best way to run it would be from the speaker outputs on your amp to the line inputs on the back of the sub.I order to do this you need to use a 3.3uf film cap in parallel with a 10K resistor. This way you run the speakers in augmented mode much like the way REL recommends you hook up their subs which people seem to love because of their good intergration with a wide range of speakers, especially British minimonitors.
"The Spendor S3/5 is a much better speaker"I assume you're joking?
Herb Reichert from enjoythemusic.com says the S3/5's are superior to a number of expensive small speakers including the Proac 1sc's. Just his opinion I guess.
"Just his opinion I guess."You got it!
I'm not going to dispute you, but have you directly compared the Spendor S3/5 w/ the Proac 1sc? Or are you basing your assumption on the fact that the Proac's are $2100 and the Spendors only $900 or $1000? Surely a $2000 speaker is better than any $1000 speaker, right?
Your insinuation that I am basing my observation on price differential reflects a lack of character on your part. I have owned a pair of Proac 1SC's for one year and have extensive listening experience with the Spendors. I have nothing bad to say about either speaker, simply that the Proacs (need I insert a IMHO here?) are preferable in many respects. Now, quit being defensive about a speaker company you do not represent.
Hi,
if you want full range, you need a sub, or a bigger speaker. Ever consider adding a sub?
