I can get a pair of these locally for not much.Anyone have experience/opinions of these speakers? These are 30"tall 3-ways,horn tweets, ported.I've had older EPI speakers (100V,201)and really liked them.Any thoughts?
Follow Ups:
The joke is that this series is a waste of both time and energy, but if you are used to the sound of the concave tweeter/ 8" woofer based, older models, then you will be disappointed.I don't know the horn tweeter. It could be all right. However, the 6" and 10" drivers have that thin, clear, flexible plastic cone which is then damped by a surround which is glued from the edge of the basket all the way to the voice coil. So, when the foam rots, the whole back of the driver's cone becomes a gooey liquid. You should consider these speakers as an opportunity to audition different 6" and 10" drivers. If you are looking to develop your own high efficiency speakers, these speakers might be for you. However, I would adjust your price point to reflect the fact that you will have to replace the midrange and woofer.
Thanks for the advice. For the time, money and trouble I think I'll pass. I've got too many speaker projects right now anyway, I usually go vintage - so I wasn't going to spring for these relatively "modern" speakers unless they were something special.
IMO the best EPI's were the original line from the mid 70's. EPI 50-100-150-201-202-Mini Tower & The Tower .. along with the BOSE 901 shaped model.....The 2-way module (inverted tweeter and 8" or 6" woofers) of this series of speakers was outstanding for the times.
