In Reply to: if a speaker didn't survive a move, what could be the cause? posted by MediaSeth on March 20, 2007 at 09:26:26:
fall off the drivers. It seems unlikely that is would happen to both speakers, but I've seen that happen too. Try the amp on a different set of speakers first, then hook up one speaker at a time.
Follow Ups:
Once in shipping (double boxed with original box also) the magnet came off of one of my MB Quart QLS-530's and took out the rest of the inside of that speaker. They were new (bought new off ebay) and they were shipped insured. The shipper fixed/replaced/whatever the broken internals for me.
This happened to me. When I moved, the movers set the box (containing my speakers) down too hard and the magnet from one of the speakers fell off the back of the cone.
the voice coil is centered in the gap- move the cone in and out and make sure it doesn't rub. Cement the magnet, move it around until the gap is clear, then let it set. I used epoxy cement. Note that this is not a perfect solution, as even a small misaligment in the gap can affect the effective flux, particularly on high end drivers, where tolerances are tighter. It will get the speaker working again, though.
I've had to do this on Allison midranges, which have very heavy magnets.
Thanks a bunch for the advice. I will try it.
Is the internal wiring soldered, or push-on connectors? Either way, a couple of good bumps in the road, and it could either break a solder joint, or knock the connectors loose. If you're getting nothing at all, I would imagine the problem is right behind the input terminals, that is if your amp really is working.A quick test to try: Take a 9V battery, voltage not too critical, but 9Vs seem to work well, and hold one speaker wire to one terminal, and quickly "brush" the other wire across the other terminal. If everything is connected inside, and all is working, you should hear "static", or something that sounds like a bad volume pot being turned.

Good luck, I feel for ya, I had a friend whose Martin Logan Monoliths got trashed in a move.
