American Acoustics Labs. I'm about to refoam a pair and was just wondering if anyone had personal experience with this company. I'm not experienced enough to tell if they are middle of the road quality or complete trash just by looking at them. Doubt if they are high quality though since the cabs seem to be particle board and veneer and there is no googling them.
Follow Ups:
I don't think I'd bother with refoaming the woofers. The AAL speakers, from my experience, aren't worth the effort.I have a pair of AAL-10 3-way, 75 watt RMS, 150 Watt max. power. 10" woofer, 5" mid-range, 2.5" tweeter. The speakers are in great condition physically, but overall they give an under-whelming performance. The woofers fail to command attention. They lack the sharpness and detail I expect from a woofer. To give you an example... they make Led Zepplin's drummer (John Bonham), arguably the best drummer in rock history, sound like an average ho-hum. Van Halen's hard driving music is limping along. There's just no soul, no back-bone to these woofers.
The mid-range is even more disappointing. It is completely lost. Rather than displaying the heart of the music, the mid-range is muted and dull. My old 1970's vintage Realistic (tandy Radio Shack) minimus 5's blow these away for mid-range.
The tweeter is just annoying. It shrieks the music. The sound is anything but pleasing as the tweeters are really harsh and shrill.
If you find a pair of AAL speakers on the side of the road... then great, it's a good find. They are worth more than nothing. If you have to spend $10.00 to repair them... I'd save my money. You could buy a better pair of speakers at a garage sale for that $10.00. I don't care what brand they are, they will probably produce a better quality sound than AAL's. For your time, cost and effort of re-foaming these speakers, you could check E-Pay and buy a much better vintage set.
Too bad I ordered some surrounds already. More experience refoaming will be a good thing at any rate.
AAl are cheap, back in the day our local big box stores would inc them with other purchases then they switched to giving away a bike. They still kept AAL as a line think MTX bought them out for awhile MTX and AAL made very simlar speakers. If you went to these big box shops looking for a speaker the sales guys would almost ram AAL down your throat so many folks arround S WI got stuck with pairs.Dont think they would be worth a refoam to me some of the worst speakers made but YMMV
They're indicating that manuals and schematics are available through them for a $7.50 a pop.
