I'm trying to find recommendations for shielded monitors. I've recently moved from a house to an apartment and I have a terribly active toddler who loves to climb. As such, I have give up my floorstanders and move to monitors. Unfortunately, the monitors will be placed near a CRT tv, so I guess that I'll need shielded ones. I've been fairly frustrated in my search for shielded speakers. Does anyone have a list? (I tried looking throught the achives, but wasn't too successful) Or, recommendations? I'm thinking upwards of $1500 or so, but cheaper is a good thing.
Follow Ups:
B&W Nautilus 805 is shielded, and available used in your price range. Not everyone's cup-o-tea, but I love 'em in my HT system.
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check them out.
I can't presume you tried. Are they distorting the picture now?
I suppose any excuse will do, if your looking to get different speakers. %)
but I really can't set up my floorstanders. My toddler would take 'em out in a minute.
Maybe you can modify the base, so at the least the little(?) brute needs to get up a full head of steam?
I'd just hate to hear about a pair of $1500 speakers ruined *in any way*, by these "wonder years".
Most of the old Altec, JBL and Tannoy monitors used Alnico magnets that are shielded by nature, a paper-clip won't even stick to the magnetic structure of the drivers. If you don't like the studio gray or black cabinets many of those monitors were also made in furniture cabinets. For instance the Altec 9844 monitor was made in a furniture version called the Carmel.
How close is Near?? depending on the motor structure, some drivers can be placed reasonably close 24" to a CRTube.. while others cannot.
It'll be pretty close, less than a foot on each side. I know it'd be a lot better to have them further apart, but it's best I can do...
