You were designing an classic, old-school "high end" speaker. This Big sound, large woofer(s), but have some detail and imageing....?I am thinking of DIY-ing meself a pair...
Follow Ups:
Old School? How about a Double Advent set-up, or maybe even Triple Advents? About as old school as your likely to get, and when I dabbled in that set-up back in the Seventies, it was pretty awsome for the money! Absolute Sound has an old article on about them on their website.
15" coaxials.
A pair of Altec A7s should do nicely for what you want.BIG sound, will rock your socks off.515 or 416 15" woofers,802 compression drivers with 511b horns,500 or 800 hz crossover.
eminance sigma pro 18in and fountek cd2 5in ribbon,98db just use a big cap , will sound very good not old school at all.
Well you could try the Audio Note E. It uses an 8 but they're designed for corner loading which adds a healthy dose of bottom end response. This site's main page on the right hand side has Audio Note Kits. Something to consider -- you could build a whole system almost from them including AMPS and DACs - or just buy em premade
You might take a look at PiSpeakers, Wayne Parham has some very nice horn/reflex systems that are also sold as kits, and he offers the plans for free(!). That has got to be the best deal in audio. In particular, I think Wayne's 7 Pi corner speaker sounds very, very good. Wayne offers excellent support, and he has a forum where you can discuss your project with him or with others.
I would buy an old pair of AR or Dynaco off ebay. If you like that sound and want that sound, why ruin modern drivers to get there? There is a certain warmth in the older units, but put them next to a modern speaker and you will note large amounts of detail mush and a pronounced boxy bass.
If you really want to build some new ones, some of WayneJ's designs on the partsexpress showcase use inexpensive drivers and have that sound.
Why is a large woofer required?
"Why ruin modern drivers to get there..." lol very true!
Most "old skool speakers have larger woofers (10-15") which give them bass... It may not be all that clean but you can feel it and it is deep. I also concidered using a pro-audio driver as my bass unit in the 12"-15" range.
I have a pair of a-phile speakers, these are going to be for 100% fun! But I would like them to still sound nice and listenable. SO detail is not the absoulte. I definately would like to capture the warmpth of the older designs in this speaker as well.
I want to be able to put on something like AC-DC "For those about to rock" and absoultely blow the doors off while keeping the integrity of the sound intact... Remember for fun!
Lastly I will be driving these with a new-found (they didn't know what they had!!!) 300WPC Carver amp.
They will be the Drag-racer for the weekend while I have the Porche for the evenings.
Thanks Pjay!
