I have a chance to purchase a demo pair of 1.3SE or new S1.4 speakers at about the same price. I have listened to both and preferred the 1.3SE. However the S1.4 were not completely broken in yet. Since the S1.4 design is based on the 1.3SE, shouldn't it be better. Just trying to make the right decision. Help!!!
Follow Ups:
Just finished listening to the 1.3SE. They are a great speaker. Gotta love that dyn sound. However since I am upgrading from the Paradigm Studio 100's, I found the bass to be lacking. Since I will be using these for home theater as well, would I be better off losing some refinement for more dynamics and bass such as the Audience 82?
I have heard the 1.3SE and a Audience floor-stander (don't remember which model). IMHO, the Audience isn't in the same class for music.
I've got the 1.3 SEs and there's more bass quantity there than you think. It's a matter of getting everything right.I've got them with the driver centres almost 2 metres - that's around 6'6" - from the wall behind, and around 1.3 metres - about 4' - from the side walls. That's centre of the room placement via the Audio Physic method, and the bass is quite solid down to the bottom of the double bass range. In fact it's surprisingly solid and you can physically feel it, though it isn't cave in your chest solid. It's more than solid enough for music but maybe not for HT. I don't have a HT setup so that doesn't worry me.
Placement closer to the wall would provide reinforcement that may give you what you want, at the cost of some hardening of the sound, a bit of lost air and imaging, and the gain of a mid bass boost.
I think part of the trick is mounting them on very solid stands and ensuring good isolation from vibration for all components. You also need an amp that can deliver the grunt on demand. That means it better have a good power supply. Wattage helps but I think the power supply is more important.
I dont necessarily agree with your argument considering that the 1.3se goes fairly low (35hz) and you use a sub for bass anyways with HT. The 1.3se needs an excellent amp to bring out the most. The Audience 82 is also an excellent speaker, but not as refined as the 1.3se and it too needs a strong amp.
I have a Bryston 4B-SST amp powering it. I'm not talking about going low. I'm talking about hit you in the chest bass. I don't disagree about the quality, just the quantity. Hence the search for a floorstander
the dyn contour's are notorious for long break-in times. i've got the 1.3se and before the 1.3mkii and the 1.1. each case the speaker improved significantly after a week of run-in.i suggest you give the new contour a little more time to make sure you compare the two at equal footing.
Would you say that the 1.3SE is more laid back compared to the S1.4. Also which speaker has more bass slam?
sorry, i have not heard the s1.4.regards bass slam, of the many bookshelves i have tried, i have heard none that betters the bass slam of the 1.3se. although this is less of a concern if you are planning to mate with a sub.
newer ain't always better. the best possible way to tell for sure is to audition them in your room with your equipment. The 1.4 is quite a bit cheaper than the 1.3se and has more elaborate cabinet work. The savings had to come from somewhere.
There is almost no price difference in Europe between the two speakers. The official price in Germany is:
- 2500 Euro/pair for the S1.4
- 2600 Euro/pair for the 1.3SEThis is the non-discounted price of the 1.3SE, before the introduction of the new Contour line.
