Just moved into new home, and listening room has shrunk in size. Never had problems with the Gold i's bass in my old room of 18w x 24l x 10h, but new room is overwhelmed with funky bass (probably now have half the volume).Bass is muddy with very poor definition. I've looked into bass traps, but real traps (not foam) are quite expensive. Thought about stuffing the ports with something, but I'm not sure if that would solve the problem.
Any cost effective suggestions would be very helpful, as I really have enjoyed these speakers and don't want to battle the wife over a replacement.
Follow Ups:
Same problem as severla folks here... you might also want to look at setiing up your speakers diagonally; this really helped a lot in my situation. Also, if you can trap a room because of cost, check Audiogon fr used traps.
You also may want to check out diagonal placement as noted below in the link (this is where I found the reference; please note that you will still have to jockey the speakers around to get the best effect however).
Good Luck & Happy Listening!

My room is 11 ' wide by 23' long and was completely overwhelmed by the Goldi's. SAme idea as the commercial traps but much cheaper.
This is a link I haven't come across. Looks like a project that I might be able to handle. You room dimensions are very similar to mine, and if it works, I'll give it a try. I did try cardboard carpet tubes stuffed with padding, but this didn't appear to have much of an effect. I think I'll try the 20" fiberglass to see how that works. After reading www.realtraps.com, I was sold on their bass control concept, but I don't see myself investing $3k to solve the problem. Could build them, but don't have the tools.
Appreciate your help.

FYI, my traps are a little different from the recipe in the link that I gave you. I used the 2" thick insulation instead of the suggested 1".I ended up with 4 corner traps. Two 12" and two 10"(both inside diameters). The 10" traps are stacked on top of the 12" traps and placed in the corners behind the system. The project cost me about $170 CDN and an afternoon of work. Well worth it.
I tried EVERYTHING before this tweak to tame the bass in the Goldi's. I stuffed the ports with Dacron (helped but changed the overall sound to much), I put them on top of patio stones (same results), hockey pucks, moved them ALL OVER the room, hung egg crate foam in the corners. None of these previous tweaks worked well enough to keep for any period of time. These traps worked very well. Highly recommended that you give them a try.
To see my room BEFORE the traps, go to the link below. I will be borrowing a digital camera again soon and will post pics of the new room layout. Added some new stuff since taking the pic below. Audio Aero Capitole MKII CDP, Nirvana SL interconnects and Lovan racks.
Sounds pretty darn good now. Most recent improvement/bonus (thanks to the new interconects and CDP) is I was able to move the speakers much closer to side walls, which gives a better soundstage and the bass is still pretty good.
A'phool,Sounds like you've been through what I'm experiencing. I may try something solid to place them on, but these are quite tall already. I've looked at the ASC traps, and I'd love to cut them a check for 6-8 of 'em, but can't justify the expediture at this point.
I'll have to get motivated and build some of these traps. It's getting to the point where I'm not enjoying listening, and I can't have that. LP's are especially overloaded in the bass, and I just bought a new turntable and phone pre.
Thanks again for your suggestions.

I still have a pair of Gold i's. You're probably in a null point in your new set-up.There's some sort of sadistic unwritten law of audio that says that the least convenient set-up will sound the best.
You may want to invest in CARA, or bribe someone to run your room...
Rob,I have tried a bit of moving around, as I started my placement with wife aesthetics in mind. That put them way too close to the back wall and corner. With some internet research, I came upon the Cardas website showing how to use the Golden Ratio / Fibonacci sequence to place the speakers and listening position. After trying it, a moving around a bit from those points, I did notice a huge increase in lateral imaging, but the base, though improved, was still overwhelming. I'm beginning to think that I'll have to try some additional measures to minimize the overload.
Thanks for your post.
