I do not understand why certain DVD's do not display to fill the screen on my widescreen Panasonic TV. I have a 16x9 Panny set and the Panny RP82 p-scan player. The player is set for 16x9 display. Certain movies (usually the el-cheapos found at the checkout lanes in Best Buy), though labeled WIDESCREEN, stretch when displayed using FULL aspect ratio on the set. The only way to avoid stretch is to set aspect to 4:3 on the set. Three recent examples I can think of - Something About Mary, Spaceballs and What About Bob?. All of these so-called "widescreen" titles display letterboxed within a 4:3 frame. What do they mean by "widescreen"? Is there a difference between "widescreen" vs. "anamorphic"? Flipping the disc over to play the "standard" format gives me the pan & scan version of the flick, still 4:3 aspect, though not letterboxed. Am I missing something here? Is there some combination of settings between the player and the TV to make this work properly?

Did it ever come to your mind that ONLY purpose of this mismatch is to piss you off? There is no reasonable explanation as why this should (do not read IS read SHOULD) be like this.
It is there to make you mad so after 5 years they can introduce new 4:3 (4:3 will be absolite in few years), with special features that will fix all problems. Of course after 2 years another 500 formats will appear to make you mad again. And you are in the game.
Do you really think that equipment is designed for your pleasure and enjoyment? If you think like that, you are living a dream.
I am actually capable of enjoying all of my DVD's, black bars or not.
I beleive that all, or at least most. movies are filmed in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. some DVD's are converted to 16:9 with no Letter Box, and some are Shipped 2.35:1 and so you have letter box. this is my understanding of it, i could be a little off.
