I am looking for a pair of speaker stands for my Quad 12L. With numerous vendors out there, could someone suggest a pair around $200-250? I would like to fill them up with lead shot eventually.
Follow Ups:
Hello!Depending on the weight of the speakers used:
Find a source of spiral paper tubes 3-4" in diameter
with 1/4" or greater wall thickness. They can easily
be cut and edge sanded to form multi columns. Make platforms
from 1.5" butcher block maple, and add adjustable floor
spikes. Glue the paper tubes to the platforms, and leave
holes in the top platforms to sand fill. You would be surprised how sturdy and dead they can be for
a small investment. They can also be set to custom dimensions
and made to look quite attractive using various wood finishes
and spray paint finishes.
Cinder blocks.
You can't go wrong with these from parts express and the price is right. Use the money you save for a night on the town
good choice ... maybe not the sexiest but darn good value ... I still like my Atlantis Pro's, though. Also a good choice and very well built (though not welded but then they're only like $180 in black ...)
Thanks very much for all the suggestions so far. I believe my Quad will benefit more from the heavy/sturdy stands. If you know any vendor carried a discounted price on any prior mentioned stands, please also post the link. As usual, I will always pay attention to Agon.
Do a Google search on them -- I've seen them available online for even less, including shipping. Or you could go with Audio Advisors, who in my experience beat MANY of the other online retailers on everything (product knowledge, shipping speed, liberal return policies, etc.) but price.Haven't seen these stands up close, but they appear comparable to Atlantis Reference stands at nearly half the cost (plus some don't like a 3-point base such as the Atlantis' as much as a 4-point one like the SC-24's).
Something comparable from Sound Anchors would run you between $400 and $500, but would certainly be even heavier-duty. Sound Anchors can also give you EXACTLY the height you want, if 24" isn't optimal for your speakers and setup.
Good luck!
I have the SC-24s and they're about 60 pounds when sand filled. They are absolutely stable.
the IF Designs from the UK? They have a special model for the LS3/5A but more affordable models for standard size monitors. Any comments on sonics is appreciated, especially the "Tenchi" model.

Osiris - are discontinued but can be found on once in while on Audiogon. These are the best I've seen at any price. I would not fill them with lead shot (this could cost you as much as the stands!) Use Silica Sand - Better, cleaner, cheaper! The link I'm attaching are sold, but it shows them in pictures.

Osiris are the best, don't waste your time looking elsewhere. Fill with Silica sand and enjoy. Even when you sell your speakers you will still own one of the best stands available.I currently have a pair of each size, my current speakers are floorstanders.
Signature Sound still has them for $319. I bought these stands from them last year. They are great stands, no regrets whatsoever. I have mine filled about 2/3's with silica sand.
I'd find out first from Quad or the distributor or someone what type of stands work best for these. I've found thru personal experience that different speakers like different types of stands, be it heavy/rigid or frame-style or lightweight rigid (like the Atacama Nexus). Stands make a big difference on the sound. Epos M12, for example, like the frame stands, which is totally counteruntiutive but a lot has to do with the enclosure, design and who knows what else. A good bet for a heavy / rigid stand is the Atlantis Pro, which is like $180. My speakers needed a heavy stand and that's what I use. Fully loaded with sand they're 35 lbs. apiece and you can get them in black or silver. High quality for the money -- my black ones have a glossy, durable powder coat. I've seen a lot of stands with real ugly, cheap powder coating that scratches easy.
Lovan are pretty nice and in your price range. I've got the Ballet II, and am happy with them.
Target HR-60's or Sound Anchors, both are excellent.
You can order them from Audio Advisor for less than $200.
I'd beg to differ. I have a pair of Atacama Nexus stands for my rear speakers, and while okay, they are not overly rigid or inert. Plus only one of the three columns can be filled. The speaker stand to get in your price range is the osiris speakers stands (available on audiogon), i have them on my main speakers and they are excellent. Only downside is that shipping is expensive since they are heavy and one piece, i.e. not assembled at your house.
Don't know what's wrong with yours
Wow, since "What HiFi" said there a best buy they must be good. Also see that Atacama is sold by hifistore.co.uk, which is listed under the dealers page with a nice link to there site.I never said anything was wrong with mine, just that there are better more rigid and inert stands on the market. Get a better pair of stands, and you'll understand what I mean, the Atacama are ok, but the Osiris Audio stands are far better.
I second that. I picked up the Atacama Nexus 6 24" stands for $125/pair on AudioAdvisor.com. A very rigid, sturdy stand that comes with carpet spikes. I picked up some Blu-Tak for coupling, some sand for mass-loading and I'm good to go. Highly recommend.
